The network toolbar filter (All, HTML, CSS, etc.) buttons should use more prominent color when selected (blue?)
Currently it's very easy to forgot the that filter is set and be confused by not seeing any requests in the panel.
This is related to both, the Console and Network panels.
Or should the Network panel also show the number of hidden requests like the Console panel does?

I think you captured the problem correctly.
Or should the Network panel also show the number of hidden requests like the Console panel does?
The count of hidden elements came up before as issue as it causes visual jitter. Until this is resolved, I would rather cut back on this information. Maybe a simple *
can indicate that a filter hides items?

I like the *
idea!
As for more prominent button designs, we've made progress on this. Work will continue in this bug that will cover all uses of the filter buttons.
