Details

From Bugzilla Helper: User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.0; en-US; rv:1.0.0) Gecko/20020530 BuildID: 2002053012 When I have subscribed to a new newsgroup, I set MailNews to sort by date (newest items first) and set it up to use "thread". But I can't set it to sort after date and use "thread" at the same time. Theres is a workaround: Set it to use "thread", close MailNews, open MailNews and then set it to sort by date. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Open MailNews 2. Subscribe to a new newsgroup 3. Set it to use "thread" 4. Set it to sort by date Actual Results: After setting it to use "threads" and you set it to sort by date, the "thread" setting is removed. The same way, if you set "by date" first and then set it to use "thread". Expected Results: MailNews should keep using "threads", even if sorting by date.
IMHO using threads and sorting by date will lead to undefined behaviour.. how will it sort the treads? by the first message in the thread? the last? You've got to chose either thread, or date. > Expected Results: MailNews should keep using "threads", even if sorting by date. Not agreeing with you there. It's either one or the other.

Just take a look at Outlook Express, Xnews, Agent (or propably any other news program) - they know how to sort it. The threads themself have to be sorted some way, right? So I choose by date. As you can see, I got it working, by setting it to be threadede first, restarting MailNews, and then set it to sort by date. Sorting of the threads works in Mozilla to, but it "forgets" the setting, if you don't close it between setting "thread" and "sort by date". So it's not because it's "undefinded behaviour" - Mozilla just can't handle to do the two things (by thread and by date) at the same time. Try it out.
