This looks like a focus-related bug if the new "zoom in" searchbar behavior introduced in Oct 3 nightly.

Process is:

  • open two new tabs, see search focused in the second tab
  • mouse click back to the first tab and, without clicking anything else, start typing.

Text goes into the searchbar, but it doesn't bulk up and I don't see awesomebar results. I'm on current Win10, current Nightly, can reproduce arbitrarily. (Apart from this, the new behavior looks nice!)

I believe this is fixed. mhoye, can you confirm?

Summary: Searchbar in new blank tab doesn't behave as expected if it's not explicity selected → Address bar in new blank tab doesn't behave as expected if it's not explicity selected

With the same STRs in current nightly, the new behavior is: after switching back to the previous tab,, the bar is laid out as usual, but as soon as I start typing, the awesomebar buffs up and I see the expected awesomebar results.

Looks fixed to me. Thanks, Dão.
