Details

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64; rv:69.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/69.0

Steps to reproduce:

I am a photographer and historical painter, I have to save a lot of images from the Internet on my computer. I want all images during a given working session to be saved only in the selected folder.
After assigning another folder to save - images should be saved to it. But Firefox (69.0.3 at the moment and previous versions) often offers a different folder to save during one session. This happens during one session and even with one any site.
In Firefox settings and I have the option to always ask where to save files In about: config is written:
browser.download.lastDir.savePerSite;false
browser.download.manager.addToRecentDocs;false
browser.download.useDownloadDir;true

Actual results:

Firefox regularly offers me not the last folder I selected, but another folder to save.
I even think an image mining feature unknown to me is enabled. ;-)
For example, Firefox offers me to save photos of tanks in the folder with tanks, and ships - with ships.
Also often saving is offered explicitly by the color scheme of the photo. And it really is.
I do not exclude that this problem is manifested only with a large amount of stored images.

Expected results:

I want Firefox to offer me to save the image only the last folder I selected for the time this session. And nothing else.
This problem is very unpleasant for any photographer working with many images, I mean.

Not a security bug that needs to stay hidden from the public.

Definitely no magic image mining features in Firefox.

It sounds like we're still getting the last-used directory on a per-domain basis. That shouldn't happen given browser.download.lastDir.savePerSite being false...

If you temporarily create a second, new Firefox profile ( https://support.mozilla.org/kb/profile-manager-create-and-remove-firefox-profiles ) do you see the same problem?

If not, can you, in the affected/existing profile:

  1. open about:support (Help > Troubleshooting Information)
  2. click "copy raw data to clipboard"
  3. paste in the box at https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/attachment.cgi?bugid=1589928&action=enter to upload as an attachment

Finally, in the affected profile, if you close Firefox completely, then rename content-prefs.sqlite to something else (e.g. content-prefs-broken.sqlite), then reopen Firefox with the affected profile, does the problem go away?

Thank you!

Oh, also, this is going to sound dumb, but to make sure we can reproduce the problem, can you describe in more detail how you're saving images? Something like:

  1. I go to site X
  2. I right click the image I want, I click "view image"
  3. then I use the "save file" button

(or whatever method you actually use to save these images)

Also, when you say:

How are you "assigning" this folder?

No, magic exists! ;-)

It sounds like we're still getting the last-used directory on a per-domain basis. That shouldn't happen given browser.download.lastDir.savePerSitebeing false... And that is where it gets odd. I have now checked 'about: config'. The stringbrowser.download.lastDir.savePerSite` was completely absent, although it really was at my last check. This is a fact and I am sure of it. (sic!!!)
Could it be that the next Firefox update changes this line? Or completely disappears?
Believe me, I am not a complete fool and would not address empty questions.
Now I have restored this string with the value 'false' and will see how the saving will happen next.
Sorry to bother you, but let's see what happens next.

If you temporarily create a second, new Firefox profile ( https://support.mozilla.org/kb/profile-manager-create-and-remove-firefox-profiles ) do you see the same problem?
ok. I'll do it soon.

Thanks for your help!

Yes, I do exactly as you described.

I choose to save the photo to the folder I want and expect that when I save the next photo, the same folder will be opened.

Really this problem was in disappearance of a line browser.download.lastDir.savePerSite? What the hell is she missing for? ;-)))
It's magic! :-)
I will wait for further results!
