This is one of those if it looks like a shoe and feels like a shoe, then I
expect it to be a shoe. or something...

steps:
edit>preferences>appearance>fonts

what i see:
two columns
one containing labels, the other containing fonts.
I decide to make everything "Arial" (hrm, how can I do that?)

So working my way up, I make everything arial, but for some reason I can't make
the first row say Arial, it only says Serif or Sans-serif.

Please consider one of the following suggestions:

1. Change to radio buttons.
2. Insert a horizontal rule.
3. Change the options dynamically to
     Serif <current-serif-font-name>
     Sans-serif <current-sans-serif-font-name>

This was fonts for hebrew. I'm going to file other bugs about the other obvious
problems
The right solution is to make it possible to select a proper font from that
list. There have been bugs on this for years. I am no longer interested in the
fonts dialog.

By replacing the word "Proportional" with "Default" and using radio buttons, we
can provide a solution that keeps the current functionality, yet becomes much
clearer:

...
                Typeface Default
Serif Times New Roman (o)
Sans-serif Arial ( )
...

Also: Bug 95227 is related.

How about:

Default Typeface Size
(o) Sans Serif: [Arial v] [16v]
     ( ) Serif: [Times Roman v]
       Cursive: [Comic Sans MS v]
       Fantasy: [Whatever v]
     Monospace: [Courier v] [12v]
I like your suggestion, Neil, but the Size field (for Proportional font) may
look out of place when the user changes the default. It may be clearer to keep
this this field in front of the currently selected default, but that would
result in an even weirder behavior.

Looks like still valid request
