My system: Celeron 300A overclocked to 450Mhz. 160MB RAM. nvidia RivaTNT video. I've been having this problem since at least M8, perhaps before that one. I've tried each milestone, and they used to work OK. Now, whenever I try to start it up, it crashes right away, before it even creates any windows. I believe this started happening once I switched to Windows 2000 a few months ago, but it may have occurred in Windows98 (can't recall). I install mozilla into c:\mozilla, making sure to delete any old install files beforehand. Then I try to run apprunner, and it prints a few lines in the commandline window, and then crashes. The window title is "NetscapeDispatchWnd: apprunner.exe - Application Error." The instruction at "0x503371b0" referenced memory at "0x60a861d8". The memory could not be "written." If you tell me what I can do to send you more debug info, I will try. Incidentally, I just upgraded Win2000 beta 3 to RC2, and it still doesn't work. Same behavior. -thomas
It sounds as if you have an old c:\windows\mozregistry.dat. Try to delete that file and restart mozilla. Report back if that works. (That is if you get this message. It's not very intelligent to use a fake mail address if you want help) As a sidenote to the mozilla team. The problem with old mozregistry.dat files is hitting people over and over again. Is there any way to determine if the file is old and quietly delete it automagically?
OK, I tried deleting that file (c:\winnt\mozregistry.dat). It was dated 6/23/99. But it didn't have any effect. :-( It still crashes in the same fashion as before. Any other suggestions? Thanks for the help! P.S. My address is real... It's the one I use when posting to the web, so that I can erase it if I start getting too much spam on it. Sad, but necessary. :-(

Daniel Bratell traded a few emails with me, suggesting a few things (delete mozregistry.dat from c:\winnt, delete the users50 folder), and none of those worked. Then he hit upon a problem he remembered about java plugins causing crashes. I looked it up in bugzilla, and sure enough this was the same problem I was having! I renamed the Java plugin DLL, and tried apprunner.exe again, and now it works! To prove it, I'm submitting this update via mozilla m10. :-) *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of 5369 ***
