User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64; rv:68.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/68.0

Steps to reproduce:

I honestly did nothing to firefox that I know of that caused this graphical glitching, and I do not know how to reproduce beyond just waiting, so I am sorry if this portion is not detailed enough

Actual results:

the attached picture speaks for itself, but ever since I updated to firefox 71, lately, this has been happening; the menu text gets completely garbled like tv snow, but goes back to normal when I hover over any one item

Expected results:

well....not this? normal UI text, no garbled system shock esque glitching, no matrix invading my web browser and generally messing with my stuff, just a normal utterly stable, web browser

Attached image extensions list.png

to save time because I need to sleep now, this is the list of extensions I have installed; the prefs.js file will follow as well, hopefully it helps more than what I can say

Attached file prefs.js

Hi, gwinnjm92!

Thanks for your contribution!

I couldn't reproduce the described behavior in:

Windows 10 Pro (64 bit)
Firefox 71.0 (64-bit)
Firefox 73.0a1 (2019-12-16) (64-bit)

I think it could be related to some extension or addon attached to your profile. I've installed some of the extensions figuring on the attached screenshot but couldn't reach that same glitch.

Please let us know if this issue is reproduced in the latest Nightly edition. You can download it from here: https://nightly.mozilla.org/

If you still have the issue please create a new profile, you have the steps here: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/profile-manager-create-and-remove-firefox-profiles?redirectlocale=en-US&redirectslug=Managing-profiles#w_starting-the-profile-manager

Once you have all this information, please let us know so we can continue investigating.

Regards,

Flags: needinfo?(gwinnjm92)

well, at first, I thought it was a corrupted firefox install, so after making a backup of my bookmarks and passwords (key4.db and logins.json files), I uninstalled firefox completely and did a fresh install and tested it again; after hours of runtime, nothing bad happened, so I reinstalled my extensions and tried again, hours after doing so, it glitched out again, so to test if its one of my extensions, I started with disabling decentraleyes first

at the time of this post, there has been no glitching as of yet, but im not counting this as fixed until it doesnt happen for the entire day, will report back if it happens again or doesnt

Flags: needinfo?(gwinnjm92)

yeah, it wasnt decentraleyes, it happened again; I disabled privacy possum next
im staying away from poper blocker, nano defender, and ublock origin until the others are vetted, and it better not be one of them either because I depend on those 3 to eliminate ads across the boards (except the ones I whitelist because they arent bad ads, and don't act like there aren't any bad ads on the internet)

Can you share the contents of about:support as a text file please?

To be clear, at the time of this post, I decided to do a clean full uninstall of firefox after I backed up my bookmarks and passwords (and my ublock origin settings and tampermonkey stuff), and after I did so, I reconfigured everything with an unmodified prefs.js file ala the about:config menu. I have gotten the group policy files for firefox on my computer and configured some settings there,

one by one I reinstalled some extensions, and despite my numerous declarations of saying "this is it", I do believe I truly found the culprit making my firefox glitching: nano defender. I thought it was a windows system bug, so I did a repair install to see if so and it wasnt a windows bug

I believe about 2 days before this post, I did a test to see what for, and when I installed nano defender and waited for a few hours or so, I got the firefox UI glitching like I was talking about, so I removed nano defender, and for a day and some change, I had absolutely no graphical glitching whatsoever; maybe its a bit of coding with firefox 71 that is conflicting with nano defender somehow, or the other way around idk. I just find it strange, as before firefox 71, I had no UI glitching at all with the list of extensions I had installed

the only extensions I have installed at the moment, are ublock origin (version 1.24.3b5) poper blocker, and tampermonkey, nothing else; I'd be willing to do 2 more days of testing to see if this happens again, and if it does, im trying out nightly because im bout tired of this >:C

This looks similar to some other bugs we have been tracking for WebRender, a new graphics rendering engine we are in the process of shipping.

If you are able to reproduce this pretty consistently with nano defender enabled, can you please re-enable it and when you see the glitching, could you try pressing Ctrl-Shift-3 ? This should generate a wr-capture folder in your AppData\Local windows folder (for example C:\Users\you\AppData\Local\wr-capture). Then please zip and share the contents of that. This again will help us figure out what is going on. Getting a few of those captures could be helpful.

I assume the ni? above was for glenn

bit of a problem with that; im doing ctrl shift 3, and no wr-capture folder/file/whatever is being created at all

No...it was for the reporter of the bug :)

Flags: needinfo?(gwatson)

Ouchies :(

I read up that someone once said the ctrl shift 3 thing for the wr-capture folder only works with the nightly version of firefox, and while I could switch to nightly real quick and back to regular firefox, I got an auction im trying to win, so gimme a coup[le hours and ill report back soon

Ah yes, apologies - it does only work in Nightly. If you have time to give it a whirl later, especially if you can reproduce the glitching with the addon you mentioned - that would definitely be helpful.

Flags: needinfo?(gwinnjm92)

I made this capture while firefox was in a stable condition (the UI not scrambled like eggs or being drunk). I don't know if this will be any useful, but perhaps it can be used in a comparison btween the stable/control and the corrupt/scrambled-UI

Flags: needinfo?(gwinnjm92)

and I forgot to add, yes I am running nightly in the latest version (73.0a1 (2020-01-02) 64-Bit)

Have you been able to see the same scrambling on nightly yet like you see in release? If you do, it would 100% be helpful to try and grab a capture when you see it happen. Thanks for taking the time to try and help! We appreciate it.

Flags: needinfo?(gwinnjm92)

its been about...5 hours or so since I installed nightly, and so far I haven't seen any scrambling yet; maybe I need to wait a bit more, maybe this edition of nightly already fixed the scrambling problem I got in regular firefox version 71, I don't know. I wouldnt mind keeping nightly installed, but I'd rather stick with the stable channel just because of the stable bit

Flags: needinfo?(gwinnjm92)

You mentioned that you thought perhaps there was some interaction with nano defender happening that was causing the glitching...can you try installing that in Nightly and seeing if you have the same issue? Ideally, if you can visit a site where you regularly see the glitching with nano defender installed on Stable in Nightly and see if you can reproduce it there - that would be great. Thank you again for trying to help! And totally understand you don't want to use Nightly forever :) Knowing the results of this test would be helpful for now.

Flags: needinfo?(gwinnjm92)

I've had nano defender installed the same time I put nightly on my computer, and to this day, I havent seen any UI glitching; maybe its some code conflict with the extension and firefox 71 specifically; if I could get firefox stable to make a wr-capture folder, I'd upload it here, but for the edition of nightly I got going on right now?

nothing, not a damn thing; extensions installed are as follows: ublock origin (1.24.3b5, nano defender 15.0.0.170, tampermonkey v 4.10.6105, and poper blocker

Flags: needinfo?(gwinnjm92)

look, unless I can get a version of nightly that would directly correspond with the version of stable firefox currently released (v 71), then maybe I could use that nightly and get the same problems to capture in a wr-capture folder, but as it stands, with this edition of nightly I got installed, I don't think ill ever encounter that problem ever again, no matter how many times I try to force it into being

mozregression --launch 71 can give you that, afaict.

Thanks for trying Nightly. We aren't yet sure why you aren't seeing it in Nightly. We just released FF 72 - can you go back to using release - I'd be interested in hearing if you still see it in the latest version of FF. If you do see it, can you please take screenshots? Take screenshots whenever you see it and send it our way.

And thanks again for trying to help us, it has been a tricky bug to figure out.

GOT IT; I had to use mozregression-gui to use the nightly equivalent of firefox 71 (stable), but I loaded up ublock origin, nano defender, and a few other extensions, and I had 2 tabs open for fanfiction.net

while I was browsing hoping to trigger this bug of mine I saw yesteryear ago, I saw it, the very first tab lost its text and the X symbol, just showing a truly blank tab, until I hovered over it and brought the text back

its a minor version of the glitch, but hopefully its what you need; at this point, I can continue and try for more, but im planning on getting a new HDD and changing my OS setup to an SSD/HDD (or SSHD depending if I win the auction for that firecuda drive) setup, ssd holds the OS, the secondary drive holds everything else, so im hoping this single capture folder will be all you need and I can switch back to the stable channel for good

Flags: needinfo?(gwinnjm92)

alright, got another wr-capture folder made, this time, about half of the total UI of firefox glitched out, bookmark toolbar, open tabs, menu and all; this will be the final wr-capture folder made unless more is needed, but for now? im switching back to the stable version of firefox, message me back if more is needed, but for now, toodles

if this double posts somehow, my internet was lagging out a bit, so please delete the duplicate post if possible, pls and thanks

Thank you! We will take a look and let you know!

Thanks! I will take a look at these captures today.

With that version you downloaded from mozregression, how easy would you say it is to repro? (does it occur after a few hours, or more regularly than that?).

If it's not too much hassle (don't worry otherwise) - could you try set gfx.webrender.picture-caching to false, restart the browser and see if you are still able to reproduce that way? That would give us a good clue if it's a glitch related to the caching system or something else. I suspect in this case it's not related to caching. I suspect also that if you see the glitch with that option disabled, it will probably only occur for a single frame, and then draw correctly on the next frame, but these are just guesses.

I'm going to build that exact version locally and see if I can repro here today.

to be honest, I think its more of a wait and see approach to this User Interface glitching; sometimes it happens in under half an hour, sometimes it takes hours for it to do so, and at first, I had only ublock origin (github version 1.24.3b5) and nano defender (again, github version 15.0.0.170), then after a few hours, I installed tampermonkey and restored my scripts/settings via a backup file I made, poper blocker, and Disable WebRTC because privacy reasons

I did do the "disable extensions one at a time" thing, even doing an "install extensions one at a time" thing per few hours I havent seen the glitching, but otherwise its been acting up as it has

how I used mozregression-gui, was I used the bisection mode, left the 1st 2 windows alone, and checkmarked the "check for bugs" box, set the 1st dropdown box next to the long box to releases, and chose number 71 (figured for nightly, that meant the nightly equivalent of firefox 71 (stable), i.e the version of firefox I started having this problem on)

after that, that version of nightly was at version 72.0a1

gwinnjm92 have you seen the problem in 72 stable yet?

Flags: needinfo?(gwinnjm92)

I just installed firefox 72.0.1 and added back on my extensions, including ublock origin and nano defender

also, as a sort of separate issue, firefox seems to have problems updating apps right, either via its extensions panel, or by installing a newer .xpi file of ublock origin over an older version already on firefox; I have to restart firefox to load up the newer extension, or uninstall the older one and install the newer one

damn it, I meant to put in there no I havent; maybe it was localized to the 71 branch only, but for now, ill reply when or IF I see it happen again, then ill pull up nightly one more time

That UI glitch I talked about? seems to be still happening in firefox 72.0.1

right clicked one of the tabs I had open to close it, and the UI/Text on the bookmarks toolbar either vanished or partially glitched, but by the time I noticed it, I already exited the right click menu and it was fixed

but the text and the X for the 2nd tab vanished completely and it took me switching tabs to restore it

alright, im still on firefox 72.0.1, and im still getting this UI glitch quite frequently now, almost at 2 to 6 hour intervals between uninterrupted runtime of everything

the UI is going bonkers, and I'd really dont want to go to nightly again because my hard drive for my SSD/HDD setup is coming in tomorrow and ill need time to get it all set up right

Thanks for the update. Would you be willing to try Firefox beta for a day or two and tell us if it happens there: https://www.mozilla.org/en-CA/firefox/channel/desktop/ ? I realize you are changing your set up so timing might not be ideal. We are still trying to track down the source of this tricky bug.

Using 72, have you happened to notice if this happens on some websites more than others? Can you share the URLs, if so? And taking more screenshots when you see this would be helpful too.

Flags: needinfo?(gwinnjm92)

ill do firefox beta for a while, just to see what's going on; also I have switched to the SSD/HDD setup at this time, and I still experience this glitching

Flags: needinfo?(gwinnjm92)

Hello - curious if you have had a chance to try out Beta and if you have noticed the issue there?

Flags: needinfo?(gwinnjm92)

yes, its rare as all hell, but I did notice some rare instances of missing text on tabs and the menu; im doing this post on firefox 72.0.2 (stable); had to reinstall windows due to a boot device error, and in the process lost the beta version of firefox I had installed

and of course, the glitching UI in my current firefox is still prevalent, VERY prevalent

Flags: needinfo?(gwinnjm92)

glitching UI in my current firefox is still prevalent, VERY prevalent

Just want to make sure I am clear - when you say 'current Firefox' you mean 72? And are there some websites where it seems to happen more often than others? I have another user who says they see the bug quite often when they visit: https://www.probuilds.net/ - can you check out that site and tell us if you are able to reproduce the issue?

Flags: needinfo?(gwinnjm92)

I outlined which firefox I was using during my last post, and I checked out the probuilds.net website, and so far nothing; this glitch isnt something I can force to happen, its one of those things that will happen without my input at all at random times of the day

sometimes just one of my open tabs loses all its text and icons and goes blank until I switch tabs, close it, or close firefox and open it again, otherwise the entirety of the User Interface has a seizure and just goes nuts, when this happens, sometimes it also affects website assets by enlarging bookmark icons over certain pictures/ads

again, I can't at this time force this glitch to happen, it just seems to like to take a page from King Crimson's bio: it just works. Or in this case, it just breaks

Flags: needinfo?(gwinnjm92)

I didnt want to post yesterday in fear of inflicting Friday the 13th™ bad luck, but today, after constant usage of firefox 73.0.1, and updating to firefox 74, I have not been experiencing this Matrix-Esque UI glitching not once, even after hours of browser usage, link clicking, menu opening, the works

I think I can say this issue of mine has been fixed and can be marked as resolved/closed (unless after this post it breaks out again, but im bettin it wont)

Bugbug thinks this bug is a regression, but please revert this change in case of error.

Keywords: regression

Suspected fix is bug 1617083 - we can reopen if this starts happening again.
