Since this report is for Firefox 71, it seems unlikely that the root cause is the same as for bug 1603026.

Unfortunately, there is not enough information to go forward with this bug. Steps to reproduce the problem reliably would help.

Hello I'm the guy having this issue. OP was kindly enough to post this for me while I was looking for answers in reddit.

Do you mean 2060? Because I don't own a GTX 2080 if that is what you refer.

Also I noticed that this happens to me in these pages in particular: reddit - https://lolchess.gg/builder - imgur and any other images uploader (the image usually goes black). I'm not sure if this happens because mostly I tend to visit these sites but other sites I frecuently visit are twitch and youtube and never happens on those two.

I have also tried disabling and enabling webrender and this started to happen around 4 months ago at max.

Since then I've tried reinstalling Firefox, start a new profile, doing a fresh install of Nvidia drivers with DDU and lastly I want to point out that I never had issues with my GPU while playing games. I don't think is a faulty GPU issue or something

Updated to 41.66 and tested out a few sites. Reddit, Wikipedia and few forums. Did not reproduce the issue. This is on both stable and nightly.

Are you able to determine any reliable STR for this issue on those sites? For example, does it seem to happen if you've been looking at the site for any specific length of time? If you leave it open on your machine for a while? Any more detail about what seems to trigger the issue would be very useful

And to be be clear, do you see this happen when you disable WebRender as well?

No it happens randomly. I'm so sorry for being so vague but I couldn't find any specific pattern that make this issue happen.
I usually leave an open tab with an image all the time while I'm in front of the PC and sometimes opening sites on new tabs the issue happens in both scenarios

Yes I disable webrender but still happens. On or off doesn't matter.

Also Ive found some people having the same issue in reddit using FF 71 for example https://www.reddit.com/r/firefox/comments/e9ohyt/distorted_image_and_missing_letters/fayy5hg/ but this doesn't seem to be reported all that much or at all because it happens rarely and it fixes by just refreshing the page or hovering the mouse over the bad rendered areas

There is a new flag available in the next nightly build (and only available in nightly builds) called gfx.webrender.panic-on-gl-error that can be set in about:config. After changing this value, a restart is required before it takes effect.

When this flag is set, any time the GPU driver reports a GL error, we will detect this and panic (controlled crash) the entire GPU process. It shouldn't take the entire browser down, just the GPU process (I believe the GPU process is enabled on Windows and Linux, not sure about Mac).

If you see the bug occur while that is active, and then restart the browser, the logs from the GL error should be visible in about:support.

If you see the glitch occur while that option is active, we can infer a few things:

• If there is no GPU process crash / output logs, then no GL error is being reported (likely signals a driver bug).
• If there is a GPU process crash, the logs should give us a clue as to what is occurring (even if nothing is logged, it would still be a clue there is a GL error occurring).

I think I was able to replicate the issue but I'm not 100% sure. I saw a small black box for two seconds showing in the bookmark area like it happens sometimes with images but it wasn't something too catastrophic like the image showing the issue where half of the letters were missing

Great! When using nightly, can you do the following:

1. Go to about:config and set the gfx.webrender.panic-on-gl-error option to true? If you see the issue, restart Firefox, then:

   Navigate to about:support
   Click Copy text to clipboard
   Paste back here.
   

   Hopefully that will give us more information.

2. Or, try pressing Ctrl-Shift-3 when you see the issue? This should generate a wr-capture folder in your AppData\Local windows folder (for example C:\Users\you\AppData\Local\wr-capture). Then please zip and share the contents of that. This again will help us figure out what is going on. Getting a few of those captures could be helpful.

These have to be done in Nightly specifically. Again - thank you very much for your help

Yes but to be clear I haven't tested enough days to be confident to say enabling WebRender fixes the issue but enabling it makes it happen less often for sure.

I just enable it from about:config > gfx.webrender.all > true

Enabling WebRender requires you to restart your browser to take effect. Can you send us the contents of your about:support as a text file again? I just want to double check what you are using now.

For clarity, we are surprised to hear this bug would go away when enabling WebRender.

Nothing obvious on that page that I can see. I also haven't been able to repro on that after trying for a bit today (Win10, nVidia 1050), but I'll do some more testing on that page + some background videos playing, which has been suggested as another way to make it more likely to occur.

Jon, could you quantify what you mean by "super often"? I'm trying to get a sense of how long I should try to repro the issue on that site, before I assume that I'm not going to repro with my current config, and I should try some other combination of hardware / driver / extensions / repro steps etc.

Not sure if there a pattern to reproduce it and non of my hardware or drivers or extensions stand out, every driver is up to date with RTX 2060 and Ublock Origin.
In the last 30 days I visited that site around 10 times? and from those 10 times I got the bug atleast 3 times but I wasn't trying to reproduce the bug or anything I was casually visiting the site cause I needed to.
Now I'm with the intention to reproduce it but It's not happening unfortunately

So I'm kinda hesitant to "report" this because might be nothing related to FF and take with a grain of salt but something similar to this bug just happen to me where letters look distorted or missing BUT on Malwarebytes. Not sure if FF and Malwarebytes shares something similar or after all might be a Windows issue, not sure

This very the same thing happens quite often to me!
Some weird disappearing texts and distortions while using FF for hours. Actually, there is no logic in this, it just happens out of nowhere. Sometimes I just read some static text and then suddenly something bugs and I have to scroll a bit the site to fix it.

Nvidia RTX 2070 SUPER here. Everything is up to date from my end.

Wanted to give an update. It's been 21 days or so. I tried out Nightly for like 3 days, didn't have any issues. Updated to FF 73 and then NVIDIA released a new driver 442.19. Since this browser version and graphics driver update the glitch has not happened once. Maybe one of the 2 fixed it? Don't know for sure but the longest stretch in months without the glitch.

Same for me. I haven't faced the bug for some time since my previous note. Meantime I have totally reinstalled NVIDIA drivers by DDU (https://www.guru3d.com/files-details/display-driver-uninstaller-download.html) and it seems that also the new version of FF was out...

And to be honest, I haven't even noticed this until the upper post appeared.
FF 73.0.1 here and NVIDIA driver 442.19.
