Windows install flow contains copy that uses 'Join Firefox' language ( See attached screenchots) . Scope of this bug is to revisit messaging in installer flow to make it more tightly integrated to messaging shown on about:welcome for our new users.

Yes, it is. Do you have the updated copy that you'd like to see implemented?

Hi Meridel, there is no due date for the copy as its part of ongoing consistency work. Thanks

Hi Punam! A few clarifying questions, please:
-
The first screenshot, "Screenshot Windows Install Step 1," is messaging for users who are re-installing Firefox. Is the request for messaging updates for re-installation, or just new installs, or for all installations (new users and re-installing users)?
-
Is the request to update the Windows copy to mirror what is now in MacOS exactly?
-
Import Settings is not currently part of the MacOS flow. Is it a default step in the Windows flow?

It's not a default step, but it does appear if you click the "Looks like you've re-installed Firefox..." notice in the footer; you're taken into the refresh flow as shown here

My understanding we show Install Step 2 in #comment 1 to both new users and re-installing users on Windows and will be good to revisit 'Join Firefox' copy here for maintaining consistency with on-boarding flow that starts with purple modal overlay on opening Firefox for the first time.
"Screenshot Windows Install Step 1," messaging is for re-installing Firefox and LGTM.
- Is the request to update the Windows copy to mirror what is now in MacOS exactly?
No, As shared by Rachel above, MacOS install steps are different from Windows.

Got it! Punam, Aaron and I are going to discuss options. In the meantime, these are my initial thoughts, including a question for you:
At that point in the flow, the user has already decided to install (or re-install) Firefox and is in the process of doing so. The only messaging really needed is to let the user know that Firefox is in the process of being installed. Any promotional messaging about getting an account or using other features/services will be served up in the forthcoming about:welcome page. Whether we update the Join Firefox messaging in about:welcome, for both macOS and Windows, is a larger conversation that should be driven by User Journey strategy (in progress now!).
So, for this particular request, my recommendation (as of now) would be to just include the message "Now installing..." This would entail making design/lay-out changes to the screen. Are design changes within scope?
I've crudely mocked up what I am proposing, as well as placeholder copy if redesign is not in scope: https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1tmkcjAN4QSWWOifyDuzLTZd1N2NnQdhmKROwML4nxHw/edit#slide=id.g70e72ec1b7_0_15

Couple of minor messaging changes has been rolled out in 74 based on experiment findings. With 74 release next week, messaging in about:welcome is switching from 'Join Firefox' to 'Start Here'. See https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1611011

Scope of this bug is to update messaging for consistency. If you and Aaron feel replacing install step in #comment 1 with new design is better on-boarding experience for our user, we should take it as a separate bug and get Rachel thought on work needed there.

Thanks, Punam. Aaron and I will meet this afternoon to finalize our recommendation.
In the meantime, a question for Rachel: Do the about:welcome copy updates in https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1611011 apply to both macOS and Windows installs?

Confirmed; yes they do.

Punam, two questions please:
-
Are there any performance or perceived performance issues with the installation process for Windows? i.e., have we heard from users that the install process seems long?
-
Are there any actions we would want to recommend to Windows users that would encourage habitual usage of the browser? For example, we could recommend that users add Firefox to their task bar, or make it their default browser.

No I spoke with esmyth and we think the perceived performance concerns have been mostly addressed with the stub installer.

Maybe if we were implementing changes to actually enable that action during install (and measuring the impact), but I think that's outside the scope of this bug.

Please see final copy in slide 2: https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1tmkcjAN4QSWWOifyDuzLTZd1N2NnQdhmKROwML4nxHw/edit#slide=id.g70f5a72d1b_17_24
Jim, did you want to review and sign-off? My main goal was to use this messaging opportunity to let the user know that Firefox would be automatically configured for performance/privacy/security (i.e., they do not need to adjust their settings, per the settings confusion raised in push/pull study).

Sorry I let this fall off my radar!
If I understand the mockup correctly, the changes are:
- New copy, headline "Optimizing your settings for speed, privacy, and safety.", body "Firefox will be ready in just a few moments."
- The (now shorter) body text should be in a larger font, almost the same size as the headline.
I turned down the font size slightly, out of concern for localization; with the current header size the text didn't quite fit when repeating each string twice (as a rule of thumb for languages with generally longer strings).
I've attached a screenshot as rendered on Windows 10 at 225% scaling. Please let me know if any further changes are needed.

This will be coming to Beta soon, but in advance here's a build using the new text in the official branding. I hacked it to not actually download so it should be safe to run without messing with your system. (Windows SmartScreen may complain about it since it's a one-off build, that can be ignored, and if you get a UAC prompt you don't need to grant permissions to run it)

This has been tested extesively tested during our testing phase for the Web based stub installer feature. The 'Join Firefox' language has been replaced, the new UI looking like what Adam attached in comment 22.
Marking the issue as verified fixed.
