Because ReCommonMark is barely maintained, somebody forked it and replaced the parser with something that, among other things, supports Markdown tables: https://github.com/codejamninja/sphinx-markdown-parser
.
browser/components/newtab
has a bunch of tables in the Markdown there; it would be wonderful if swapping out the parser made them Just Work.
Type: defect → task
Summary: recommonmark doesnt' → recommonmark doesn't support tables; investigate switching to sphinx-markdown-parser

I've attached a starter patch. It gets things running, but doesn't yet convert Markdown correctly.

Since recommonmark has been replaced by MyST in bug 1746742 (thanks, championshuttler!), which appears to support tables, I'm going to close this one as WONTFIX.
