RESOLVED DUPLICATE of bug 1621570

People

(Reporter: harry+moz, Unassigned)

Details

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:75.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/75.0

Steps to reproduce:

Click in location bar

Actual results:

Whole URL get's selected

Expected results:

Don't select text and place cursor in URL

After latest update, whenever I click in the location bar, the whole URL gets selected. It's driving me literally crazy.
I've looked around, and there's supposed to be a setting, to disable this behaviour, but the setting doesn't have any effect.
I hope, this is not intended behaviour. Because changing something like this on purpose, something which is so deeply engrained in muscle memory after I don't know how many years of using firefox, could only be described as extremely mean-spirited. Also this would be the only input box on all of my applications that behaves this way.

Bugbug thinks this bug should belong to this component, but please revert this change in case of error.

The only workaround to this is to compile Firefox yourself using the patch that is attached to the bug this is a duplicate of. It seems ludicrous to be forced to take such a drastic measure for something that is literally a 2-line code-change, but it's worth it for those of us where this interaction truly is deeply ingrained in muscle memory. In addition, it seems that this type of power-user-hostile preference-culling is the new normal within Firefox leadership, so I am sure there will be many other changes to come that will require compiling Firefox yourself in order to work around them.

Fortunately, the build process for Firefox is very mature. Following the written guides worked flawlessly for me, and using the artifact build process brings the build time down to only a few minutes. The only thing I couldn't easily figure out was how to use the regular Firefox icons. I resolved this by adding ac_add_options --with-branding=browser/branding/official to my .mozconfig file.

Power-users are the base where Firefox growth stems from, and I hope Firefox leadership will eventually realize that alienating their base is harming their grown. Until then, take back the power and build Firefox yourself. Once you've done it, it really feels great to have control over your browser again.
