User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10.15; rv:76.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/76.0

Steps to reproduce:

Opened bookmarked page, https://www.wunderground.com/forecast/us/sc/charleston/KSCCHARL26?cm_ven=localwx_10day

Actual results:

Page opened to the "un-logged in" version of the site. When I then tried to log in the website would never load, with just a spinning symbol in the middle of the page.

Expected results:

The page should have opened with my saved log in credentials. The site was working fine the evening of 05/14 and then 8 hours later, on the morning of 05/15, the site would not load. I contacted Weather Underground and they said no changed to their site had occurred so that it must be a browser issue. I have cleared the browser cache and restarted the computer. I've turned off Privacy Badger for the site. This is occurring using Firefox for MacOS, version 76.0.1 on a MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Early 2015), running Catalina 10.15.4 (19E287). It seems specific only to Firefox, as Chrome and Safari both load the page fine on the same computer. The issue is not occurring in Firefox for MacOS, version 75.0 on a MacPro (mid 2010) running High Sierra 10.13.6.

Hi,

I am not able to replicate the issue. I've tried on: mac Os 10.14. I was able to create an account, log in, save as bookmark, and when closing and lunching firefox opening the bookmark page shows the website correctly (the "what it should look like" image from the attachment provided)

On the following versions:
Release 76.0 (64-bit)
Beta 77.0b8 (64-bit)
Firefox Nightly 78.0a1 (2020-05-28) (64-bit)

Please test if the issue occurs to you in safe mode (add-ons disabled). Here is a link that can help you do that:
https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-firefox-issues-using-safe-mode

Please also try this on the latest version of nightly. You can download it from here: https://nightly.mozilla.org/

I will move this over to a component so developers can take a look over it. If is not the correct component please feel free to change it to an appropriate one.

Thanks for the report.

Best regards, Clara.

Clara,
This is one of the most confounding things. I have tried

  1. clearing Firefox cache and cookies
  2. restarting in safe mode
  3. removing the Firefox app, redownloading and installing it
  4. downloading and installing Firefox Nightly

None of this has worked and the problem persists. Firefox Nightly 78.0a1 (2020-05-29) has the same problem as Firefox 76.0.1.

The confounding thing is that the the Weather Underground site works fine on this computer using Google Chrome and Apple Safari. And the Weather Underground site works fine on my older Mac Pro desktop running Mac OS 10.13.6, which is also running Firefox, version 76.0.1.

So, the issue seems to be with this laptop, a MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Early 2015 - 2.7 GHz Dual-Core Intel Core i5) running Mac OS 10.15.5 (19F96).

Again, what happens is....
I launch the site, https://www.wunderground.com/forecast/us/sc/charleston/KSCCHARL26?cm_ven=localwx_10day, from my Firefox Bookmarks Toolbar (but I have tried just launching www.wunderground.com) and, usually, this takes me to my "logged in" profile. But, currently, this takes me to an "unlogged in" page, with the option in the upper right to "Log in". When I click on this I'm taken to a separate sign in page, I enter my email address and password and click "Sign in". At this point the page redirects but hangs up and stays hung up with a spinning circle (I have an image of it, if needed).

The website works if I don't try to log in so, it appears that there is something about the "logging in" that causes the problem. But the logged in version is "ad free" and I paid for that feature, so I'd like to be able to take advantage of it. I'm not sure whether it is a corrupted preference file in the system (and I am loath to monkey around in there anymore), or something peculiar with this combination of hardware/os combo and Firefox. I just don't know (which is why I contacted you).

This is the page that results from trying to sign in from the sign in page. Note the "text" where there should be symbols. The "star" under the Weather Underground logo and the "settings" next to the Join. These should be a star symbol and the cog symbol.

The severity field is not set for this bug.
:farre, could you have a look please?

Hi Norm,

I was unable to reproduce in macbookpro 10.15 either.

If using private window does the website work? What happens if you change the password? https://www.wunderground.com/forgot-password Here's the link to reset it.

Or maybe deleting the saved logins from about:preferences#privacy ?

Best,

Clara

Thanks for the bug report Norm!

I opened up the link you supplied, and I was struck by the fact that in the space in the "bad" image I get an ad. Are you using any type of ad-blocker, and on what tracking protection level are you running?

Andreas, thanks for checking into this for me. I has been particularly confounding, as I may have stated. First, here are my login credentials for Weather Underground so you can see just what I'm seeing.
Username/email: Norm.Shea@me.com
PW: Tigger19!

Yes, the advertisements on WU are abominable, so I do have an "ad free" subscription but also run Privacy Badger for Firefox.

An update to the situation, in Clara Guerrero's last communication, she asked if I'd used a "private window." I was unfamiliar with that feature but tried it and the, shockingly, did allow me to successfully log in to WU. So, a step forward, but that means I have to log in to WU every time I open a new page (I will usually have three WU tabs open, the local 10-day forecast, my personal weather station, and a radar map), so, not the biggest deal, but mildly inconvenient and something I'd like not to have to do if possible. I'm not sure if that is informative as to what is causing the problem, e.g. if it is .plist that is corrupt somewhere just on this machine?

To recap,

  1. it only happens on this machine, a MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Early 2015 - 2.7 GHz Dual-Core Intel Core i5) running Mac OS 10.15.5 (19F96), WU opens fine in Firefox on my MacPro desktop and Dell laptop
  2. it only occurs in Firefox on this machine, WU opens fine in Safari and Chrome

And again, this is what I've tried,

  1. clearing Firefox cache and cookies
  2. restarting in safe mode
  3. removing the Firefox app, redownloading and installing it
  4. downloading and installing Firefox Nightly

I'm now running Firefox 77.0.1 and tried with Firefox Nightly 78.0a1 (2020-05-29). None of this has worked and the problem persists if I try to log in regularly (not in a Private Window), so, again, I'm thinking it is some saved artifact that both Firefox (non-Private window) and Firefox Nightly share/access that is causing the problem.

So, that's it. I do appreciate you looking into it for me.
