User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:76.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/76.0

Steps to reproduce:

For last few years I maintain a set of Docker containers, including some with Firefox. Periodically there is a problem with some new releases of Firefox browser. The latest one is with the version 77.0.1. It suddenly scrambles all web pages (see the attached screenshot). The previous version 76.0.1 didn't do that.

Actual results:

I've new Docker images with Firefox 77.0.1. The attached screenshot show, how web pages are scrambled. The page's source code seems at the first look OK. Please check it with one of the containers above.

I've mitigated it by rolling back to the version 76.0.1. Please check one of the issues on GitHub, for example:
https://github.com/accetto/xubuntu-vnc/issues/7

Expected results:

Web pages should not be scrambled.

Additional information:

I've found, that the problem relates to the switch FORCE_DISABLE_E10S=1 that I use in containers.

I have also the Docker image variation multi, which does not use the switch and that does not scramble web pages. However, Firefox crashes all the time.

With this knowledge I've quickly found also the following pages:
Almost every site is broken in Firefox 77
Content-Encoding not honored when e10s is turned off via browser.tabs.remote.autostart=false or MOZ_FORCE_DISABLE_E10S=1

Hi,

Bug https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1638652 seems to be fixed in latest Nightly, can you please retest this using the latest Nightly build (https://nightly.mozilla.org/) and report back the results?

Thanks for the report.

Flags: needinfo?(accetto)

Thanks for the answer. I've not tested it with Nightly yet, but I've tested it with the release 78.0b5 before and it was OK. I mean, the multi-process has been disabled and the pages were not scrambled.

Flags: needinfo?(accetto)

I've tested it with the beta release 78.0b9 and it's also OK.

@Accetto,

If Beta 78.0b9 its OK that means that the bug is fixed in Beta version and you won't see the bug anymore in release version 78, after the update from 2020-06-30. So lets keep this issue open until 2020-06-30 when Beta 78 will become Release 78 and verify that the issue is no longer reproducible in release 78.

Thanks for your cooperation.

You're welcome :)
I'll test it after the release and let you know.

Hello Alin,
I've just tested it with the new release 78.0 and it's working.
Seems like you can close this issue.
Cheers, Accetto

Thanks for the updates Accetto. I will close this issue as resolved - worksforme, but if the issue occurs again, please feel free to reopen the bug.
