I can open the prefs fine, and the session history is set to 1 day. I installed over 1.0 Final and it displayed this behaviour, I uninstalled and reinstalled 1.1 and still same problem. I will try removing the profile and see if that helps. On my win2k boxes it does not exhibit this behaviour.
The prefs that says 1 day is not for session history. it is for global history. To avoid confusion, Session History prefs was removed couple of weeks ago.
I deleted this profile and reopened Mozilla. It now functions correctly. This machine had 1.0 installed and then upgraded to 1.1, JRE 1.3 is installed, and the calendar piece installed. All functions worked except for the back button. Since the recreated profile fixed it, I have no effective way to do further testing on this oddity.
I think this is a fallout of the prefs change. Jag already has a bug related to this.
