Steps to reproduce:
Update Firefox from version 77 to version 78
Actual results:
The Debian search plugin is no longer found.
Expected results:
The Debian search plugin would appear, and I could use the keyword I added to search with it.

Are you using the official Firefox installation from mozilla.org, or are you using a debian provided package?
Also, which searches are in that directory?
The Debian package, which provides a search engine for Debian packages (specifically https://salsa.debian.org/mozilla-team/firefox/-/blob/release/master/debian/debsearch.xml).

This should work now in 78.0.1. I'm investigating a better way for y'all to include an extension in your distro.

We've removed the ability to define search engines using XML in distributions. It is recommended that you create a search extension and put that extension in the distribution/extensions directory. You'll need to name it ID_OF_EXTENSION.xpi.
Here's an example of a search extension i found:
