Details

Firefox 79.0b5 (64-bit), Ubuntu 18.04.

STR:

  1. Start Firefox.
  2. Tap F6 to focus the address bar.
  3. Tap "c" to get a suggested URL ("chat.mozilla.org" in my case).
  4. Tap Enter.

Expected:
page opens.

Actual:
page doesn't open.

This works when pasting a URL in step 3. Therefore perhaps related to auto-completion?

Component: DOM: UI Events & Focus Handling → Address Bar
Product: Core → Firefox

:adw, could you have a look please?

For more information, please visit auto_nag documentation.

Flags: needinfo?(adw)

Could you be more specific please? Does the URL not autofill when you type c? Does it autofill but then nothing happens when you press enter? Something else? If it doesn't autofill, you should at least get a search page with c when you hit enter.

Does it autofill but then nothing happens when you press enter?

Yes, this.

Something else? If it doesn't autofill, you should at least get a search page with c when you hit enter.

I can only reproduce this with Firefox Developer edition (79.0b9 (64-bit)), it works on current Nightly and release.

Are there any errors in the browser console (Tools > Web Developer > Browser Console) when it happens? Does it happen only when a URL autofills or does it happen other times too? For example, if you type something that doesn't autofill and then you hit enter; or you type something and regardless of whether it autofills you use the arrow keys to select a different result and then hit enter.

This sounds similar to bug 1642982.

One more thing, the bug summary says "first opened website." What do you mean exactly? The first site you try to go to after Firefox starts? The first site in a new window? Something else?

Are there any errors in the browser console (Tools > Web Developer > Browser Console) when it happens?

Only from before it happens (when starting the browser):

Does it happen only when a URL autofills or does it happen other times too? For example, if you type something that doesn't autofill and then you hit enter;

Doesn't happen in case I type some search query like (not a url). Also doesn't happen if I type a URL I didn't visit before.

or you type something and regardless of whether it autofills you use the arrow keys to select a different result and then hit enter.

Interestingly, that works. Using the arrow keys to first select another result (without pressing Enter) and then returning to the first proposal (chat.mozilla.org in my case) doesn't work.

This sounds similar to bug 1642982.

One more thing, the bug summary says "first opened website." What do you mean exactly? The first site you try to go to after Firefox starts?

This.

The first site in a new window? Something else?

Perhaps it's worth re-evaluating priority and severity of this issue, as it doesn't only affect the first opened website. Perhaps it's also a duplicate of bug 1659609?

Flags: needinfo?(adw)

There's not much actionable here, so I don't think it would help to increase the priority.

Re: bug 1659609, is that what you're seeing? You mentioned chat.mozilla.org in comment 0 -- are you logged in to that site similar to what bug 1659609 comment 3 mentions? Can you reproduce this with any other sites? Any other sites where you're not logged in?

Re: bug 1659609, is that what you're seeing? You mentioned chat.mozilla.org in comment 0 -- are you logged in to that site similar to what bug 1659609 comment 3 mentions?

Yes.

Can you reproduce this with any other sites? Any other sites where you're not logged in?

No, currently, I can't reproduce this with other sites, but currently the issue also doesn't occur anymore with <chat.mozilla.org>. I'll comment again once I can reproduce it.

Happened with GMail (I was logged in) too. It wasn't the first opened page, but the first opened page in a new tab (opened with Ctrl + t, without tapping F6). With Nightly (82.0a1 (2020-09-07) (64-bit)).

Thanks, bug 1659609 sounds promising then. That's a problem in Gecko and there's not much we can do about it here in address bar, so we'll just have to wait and see how that's resolved. In the meantime, I'm hesitant to mark this as a duplicate since it's not entirely clear. I'll change the see-also relationship to a depends-on.

I added all See Also bugs listed in bug 1656310 as a dependency for this bug, but I suspect they are actually all duplicates. I hope we will see some progress on this soon.
