As far as I remember, the current limit is based on people being able to remember about 7 recent items on average, after which a recently used list becomes less predictable. (Obviously this is going to differ for different people and contexts.) I'm not sure how we then ended up with 6 -- it seems that we were conservative, and it's now clear that some users want more items. It's also worth noting that the first item is the current tab, so effectively we only offer 5 tabs to switch to.
There's likely more room for improvement here, but as a first step let's bump the limit from 6 to 7.
