can this file type only be opened with IE (it does) this site is password
protected also (maybe you can't do anything)

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1.
2.
3.

Actual Results:
page of jarbled text in IE a setup option
it requires a login (or perhaps for my host to be inside sandiego.edu).

when you load the page in mozilla, select view>pageinfo
for the webpage i'm currently looking at, i get:
Type: text/html

if you see text/<something> then it's not our fault. (we can move the bug to
tech evangelism if you like)
Summary: this should open an installer file for mcaffee antivirus but it only gives jarbled text. → this should open an installer file for mcaffee antivirus but it only gives jarbled text.
it opens the installer in IE though is mozilla able to deal with files type .msi
My computer (win98) has .msi support. But when I lookup the
.msi (Msi.Package) entry in my regedit, I don't see any content type
defined. Maybe that is part of the problem too.

no, that doesn't relate.
we're looking for what mime type does the server indicate.
it probably is sending text/plain. if it does, it's the server's fault.

Sorry, it says type: text/plain and the size is over 18000 kb. It downloaded as
mcafee viruscan when I used IE.
so the server is incompatible with Mozilla?
no, the server is just misconfigured. you'd get the same result in any web
browser which complies with the http protocol.

i'm sending this to tech evangelism with the hope that you can contact the
webserver's admin and explain that they should configure .msi to be sent as
application/octet-stream.
