Steps to reproduce:
Open Thunderbird normally after update to 78.1.1 (This has occurred several times.)
Actual results:
Tasks baring older dates before current date disappear. Occasionally they reappear randomly, but mostly not.
Expected results:
Tasks appear for use as usual in Tasks folder.

Are you talking about the dedicated task tab? Or the task list in the today pane? What filter have you set for each? Maybe set it to "all"? Old task might be hidden if they do not match the filter criteria anymore.

It's in the Task pane, and I have it set to show "All". The main problem seems to occur with tasks set on a past date. They usually show up in the reminders pop-up box, which shows tasks set for the current date or past dates. The past dates are sometimes completely disappearing, but occasionally they will reappear randomly at a later time. On one occasion virtually all my tasks (including many set for future dates) simply vanished. I was only able to restore them by using a back-up of my profile files.

I have been having same problem since upgrading to TB 78. I'm at 78.6.0 now and it happened again today. I use tasks extensively and had about 37 tasks showing in the Task Reminders window. There were several others due today but their Start Time had not arrived so they did not show in the Reminder window. I shut down TB then restarted it about 30 minutes later. ALL of the tasks that were in the reminder window disappeared except the first one. They no longer show in the task list either. The tasks whose time had not arrived yet remained in the list and popped up in the reminder window as their times arrived. This happened to me back in December and I tried to duplicate the problem over several days but was never able to make it happen again.

Additional Info 01/15/2021: I just realized that most if not all of my recurring tasks had disappeared also even if they had been marked completed which should have set them up for the next future date in the cycle. One theory I have is that the problem with the tasks disappearing has to do with when they were set up (for recurring) or when they were set up or last updated for other tasks.

I have upgraded to TB 78.7.0 I have done more testing this past week and this problem still exists. Attached are detailed notes of the steps I've gone through attempting to find a consistency in what is happening. One thing I haven't seen in this round of testing is any of the disappearing tasks reappearing later. I also have not been doing any testing with the recurring tasks so don't know if that is still a problem or not.

I have updated TB to 78.8.1 and started testing again on 3/17/2021. All of the previously mentioned task problems appear to have gone away. I can leave tasks in the reminder window, shut down TB and when I restart the next day they remain. I have tried snoozing them for a period of time, shutting down TB while they are snoozed them restarting the next day and they are still there. I have tested a recurring task (daily) and it has worked correctly the past two days. I plan on proceeding carefully with this as I can't afford to lose the tasks. If I have further issues, I will report it immediately.
Has anyone else tried the tasks again to see if you are still having the previous issues? If yes, what release of TB? Thanks to all for your input.

I have not updated to 78.9.0 yet but will try to do that in the next week or so. I have had no problems since updating to 78.8.1 and I did run a series of pretty thorough tests.

The original problem seemed to occur as the result of an upgrade at the time (although it was amazingly 8 months ago, I see). Whatever was done at the time seemed to fix it, and (touch wood) the problem has not recurred for me since. I'm now using 78.9.0 and all seems good.

Not sure if I'm supposed to re-open this or start a new bug report but will start here.
This bug has reappeared for me since updating to 78.10.1. I did this update on 5/8/2021. Prior to the update I had 19 tasks showing in the task reminder window. Immediately after the update 17 of the 19 tasks had disappeared. The two that remained were from the prior month... April 18th and April 30th. The 17 that were missing were dated May 4 (2 tasks), May 6, and May 7 (14 tasks). I restored from backup and all was good. I shut down TB but left PC running overnight.
The next morning, 5/9/2021, I fired up TB and this time the task from 4/18 was still there as were one each from 5/4, 5/6 and 5/7. The remainder all disappeared again. I shut down TB and recovered from backup. Anybody else see this problem reappear?

This morning (5/15/2021) at 9:25 am, I fired up TB and the task mentioned above dated April 18th has disappeared. This was a test that I had been monitoring since entering it originally. It had no due date assigned and was not marked complete. It has been showing up regularly in the task reminder window until today.

Task behavior appears to have changed so maybe we are making some headway. I updated to TB 78.12.0 on 7/18/2021. On 7/19/2021, I added a test task and left it open in the reminder window when I shut down for the night. Opened TB the next morning (7/20/2021) and it was still there and showing in the reminder window. I added a second task back dated to 6/20/2021 and it immediately showed in the task reminder window. I shut down TB that night. On the morning of 7/21/2021, I opened TB and the original task from 7/18 was still showing in the reminder window. The back dated task was not showing in the reminder window but was showing green in the task list. I changed the date to 6/21/2021 and it immediately showed in the task reminder window. When I opened TB on the morning of 7/22/2021 the results were still the same. Task from 7/18 showing in reminder window and back dated task not showing in window but still showing green in task list. I left the date on the back dated task as 6/21/2021 for the next 2 days and all remained the same.
Conclusion: It appears that at 30 days old, the task quits honoring the reminder but does remain in the task list. The improvement in the process that I see is that the task no longer completely disappears. I believe that the task should continue to show in the reminder window no matter how old it is. If others like the current behavior, perhaps a setting could be added so this could be controlled by the user?
