Collections was recently added to mobile version of Firefox, but they are not available on desktop version which makes it less useful.

Expected results:

I've been waiting for this on the desktop for a while now. Don't really need it on Android, though I see that it has been released. I need to be able to group tabs into a common "theme". Close and open entire collections (themes) independently, with a single click. Read and update those same tabs, and then close them again with the latest view of each tab being saved, rather than the original seed bookmark. It's similar to bookmarks, but a lot slicker and always up to date with the latest data/info when viewing dynamic sites that are constantly changing. Sync to Android would be a bonus, but the desktop is more important.

Without this feature, I have been using folders of bookmarks. But it is impossible to "Open All as Tabs in a New Window" which makes it very clunky!

If you put that folder onto the Bookmark toolbar, it's close to being OK, if you don't have too many collections.
It's a bit too small font and icon size, but workable, in general.

The problem with folders of bookmarks is that they don't keep tab history which is really important feature that Collections for Android provide.
So it'll be very nice to have proper collections on desktop. (I have like 400+ tabs open in 10 windows that I use to kinda separate them by theme but they end up too general because if I need to really separate them by exact themes I would have 30+ windows which is nightmare, especially as FF sometimes does not recover all of them on startup (this is why I backup the FF profile daily)

Collections for Desktop is a must!

And not only that, but it's also important that saved Collections are kept saved in the cloud.
I noticed that whenever I have to uninstall Firefox on Android (for whatever reasons) when I reinstall it all my Collections are gone. I don't lose my bookmarks at least. But it demotivates me to use Collections.
That's something to keep in mind.

Also, syncing between desktop and mobile is crucial!

Don't want to be the guy who just +1s, but Collections are not very useful if you can't use them across both platforms. That's a fairly big reason why I'd consider moving a lot of my usage over to Edge right now. I rely heavily on the Containers and that's the one major thing keeping me from a total switch-- Firefox has Containers, Edge has Collections.

If either had both, I'd move everything to that one.

A website/page Collections system would be a huge benefit for those who have a lot of tabs open and need to group them. Bookmarks and Pocket do not work for tabs which need to be worked within a group.
Although it pains me terribly, I am becoming more and more tempted to go back to Microsoft Edge because their new Collections works very well, listing all "added" websites/pages as a clear list which can be called up extremely easily.
In comparison Bookmarks and Pocket are a nightmare for referring back to a group which needs to be linked, most easily within a list.

I don't know why this feature was added to the mobile app but not on desktop. I'd rather not have it all than have half of it. I'd be happy to work on it. You have over 2,000 repos and over 200 results for "firefox". How can I contribute to the browser to try to get this feature in?

I agree with the commenters about the serious necessity of having a "collections feature" in the desktop version, and being able to keep it saved and synced to the user account profile. The days of basic bookmark management are long gone, and I'm sure many would agree that when trying to manage bookmarks securely, privately and most importantly in a way where they can be recovered in the same structure they were saved (in a situation of disaster/failure/etc.) is not just a luxury anymore. As a developer, I find that hours can go to waste when trying to find stuff used a few weeks ago. The task of just getting organized is a major time-thief. And no, relying on "my-friend-Google" to find the exact same reference again is not a reliable way to go.

There are hundreds of extensions with similar attempted bookmark management solutions, so clearly there is a need from a very wide user base. If the collective experience of a few members of the Firefox dev team put their heads together, surely a beautifully, powerful feature could be built right into the very core of this browser family.

Apart from having a collection, making it searchable and filterable would be an immense advantage. One of the few I found that gives me the ability to quickly find and filter stuff of relevance inside a mess of tens of thousands of bookmarks, is this Bookmark search plus by aaFn. I actually asked this developer whether there was a chance of getting this add-on/extension working in Edge, seeing that their collections feature helps me sort my life out, however, there is no search functionality in thiers.

Yes, I contemplated defection to Edge, out of frustration with the way I can't group things in my browser in a way that makes sense and is easy to use.

So to whoever is in control of features, please add this feature at the earliest convenience. I'm sure only about 2-3% of people bother to create an account with Bugzilla to voice their opinion, so from the roughly 30 posts here there are probably over a thousand who feel the same and another order of magnitude or two, who would welcome it with open arms. We don't want Edge to flaunt their iffy collections feature over an even better solution, do we? :-)

I'm using TabCloud on Chrome and every time I try to move back to FF I realize TabCloud doesn't work on FF ... just tried to move to FF again after I found the Collection feature on mobile. Imagine my surprise and frustration once I realized there is no Collection feature on desktop.
Also I was beginning to doubt my sanity ... the feature is on mobile, it MUST be on desktop... WHY can't I find it? :)
