It would be nice if there was some way to select from different From addresses
when sending mail (using the dropdown list), but without requiring multiple POP
accounts and the corresponding folder trees.
There would be two ways to achieve this:
1. A single account could contain more than one address (perhaps via an
Advanced... or Multiple... button beside 'email address' on the account
configuration screen)
2. There could be a way to create 'send-only' accounts - basically nothing more
than a name and email address, and any necessary options about attaching it to
an SMTP server.
I prefer #2 as it interferes less with the user interface for people who don't
need this feature, and I suspect it might be easier to implement.
The reason this would be a useful feature is that many domain hosts provide a
setup in which a single POP account actually collects mail for all addresses to
a domain (*@example.com). It is sometimes useful to use multiple different
addresses for categorising received email, even though they go to the same
account. Once you've done that, it's convenient to respond from those addresses
- for example, you could respond to a query about the site from
webmaster@example.com, whereas you might use jane@example.com to send your
personal email.
To compare with the competition, Outlook Express sort of contains this feature,
although you have to hack it even there. (Basically, you can set up a POP
account to a bogus server that is set to not receive mail, and because OE
doesn't insist on multiple folder trees, that achieves the desired result.) This
is one of the things that's keeping me moving to Mozilla mail from OE.
And no, it's not just me who wants this; I just read a mailing list email where
somebody is asking how to achieve it in *Netscape 4*. Ho hum.
Apologies if this is a duplicate, I tried several searches but couldn't find it.
