Before :
- Write your search text
- Click on the Wikipedia icon to directly search on the Wikipedia website
Very quick and efficient : 2 steps to search on Wikipedia.
Now :
- Write your search text
- Click on the Wikipedia icon to change the search engine
The Wikipedia search engine is selected and the interface has been refreshed so your mouse pointer is not anymore on the Wikipedia icon
- Move the mouse pointer to the first line and click on "search with Wikipedia"
Now we need 3 steps to search on a dedicated search engine.
Expected :
- If search bar is empty, change the search engine and let the user write its search text
- If search bar is not empty send immediately the request on the selected search engine

That is indeed inefficient, but clicking on the first result is not exactly what I'd expect most users to do. I may be wrong, so it's worth investigating if it's a common action. I'll report this bug to UX so it can be discussed.
Note there are many ways to achieve the same, and some of those may be more efficient, for example you could:
a. click on the engine first, type you search and press Enter
b. type your search, ALT+DOWN to an engine, press Enter twice (this is a bug that should be fixed imo, one Enter should be enough)
c. type your search, click on an engine and click on the Go button (that is always in the same place)
d. type your search, click on an engine and Enter
e. CTRL+K, click on an engine, type and Enter
f. various combinations of the above
c) is the closest to your example
Bug 1657212 will also add modifiers support so you can use ctrl+click or middle click to open the search in a new tab directly, though that won't consume the current tab.

Yes, it is. Sorry for the duplicate, I haven't found the bug before submitting this one !
But I don't understand why the bug #1658994 is closed without a solution.

We're discussing about an override modifier for this, in bug 1657212. In particular we'd like to make so that you can shift+Enter or shift+Click to immediately execute a search like it was before, it's still under evaluation though. You can follow that bug.
