Steps to reproduce:
Since updating from 80.0.1 to version 80.1:
first 3 startup tabs (e.g. twitter) are rarely loaded, although the tab is shown. Kill and restart (3 to 4 times) sometimes helps. This occasionally happened with previous versions too, but was rare. It has become much more frequent now. I kill and restart, and eventually it works.
Actual results:
My 1st 3 tabs (twitter) are not opened (not even loaded). After those 3, there are many other tabs that open normally.
Expected results:
My first 3 tabs should be opened, just like the others.

I couldn't manage to reproduce this issue on Firefox 81.0, Beta 82.0b4 and latest Nightly 83.0a1 (2020-09-29) On Windows 10 x64.
Could you please retest this on the latest Nightly build (https://nightly.mozilla.org/) using a new clean Firefox profile (https://goo.gl/AWo6h8) without any of your settings.
I am using Windows 8 (version 6.3 (Build 9600))
I created a new test Firefox profile (but I did not use it, as the Nightly Firefox also created a new profile that I used)
I installed an extra Firefox from the nightly build.
I imported my 'home page tabs', and a plug-in that I often use. And logged into the sites that I frequently use.
I no longer see the issue.
But now I have 2 Firefox installations on my PC.
Am I supposed to switch to this nightly build permanently, and uninstall the regular one?
Or uninstall both and reinstall my normal Firefox?

This morning when I started Firefox Nightly, it showed the same issue. Other tabs are opened, but not the first 2 (twitter pages).
I will do some tests myself.
Unfortunately yes, I've since updated to version 82.0.2 (64 bit). But the problem has remained. 9/10 of the time it happens. My harddisk caching has been failing for a long time now which may cause tabs to 'stop trying to load' (but this wasn't an issue in the past). On Firefox startup, I do open many tabs ( >20), but it's the twitter pages (the first 2 tabs) that never load. I fix the issue as follows: I kill the app (once I know that the first tabs won't load). Then start and kill the app again (because the 2nd time it doesn't really load any pages). If I then start Firefox again, I get the "something went wrong", and if I wait about 30" before clicking 'open startup pages' I have about 60-70% chance to get most of my tabs successfully loading. At such times I usually also have chrome open, again with many tabs.

I'm affected by this too, in Ubuntu 20.04 with Firefox 83.0+build2-0ubuntu0.20.04.1.
Tested nightly (85.0a1.en-US.linux-x86_64) with a clean profile, and the issue remains.
Steps to reproduce
- Start nightly with
./firefox -no-remote -profilemanager - Create a new profile, select it and click Start Nightly
- Open these three tabs (replacing the first-run tabs currently open):
- https://twitter.com/i/lists/222412094
- https://twitter.com/uusijani/
- https://twitter.com/i/lists/1245729655862280192
- Open preferences, set Home to Custom URLs..., select "Use current pages"
- Close the window
- Start nightly again with
./firefox -no-remote -profilemanager, select the previously created profile
What happens
None of the three tabs load any content. The firefox process also doesn't end after closing this window with the non-working tabs, I have to Ctrl-C out of it.
Further info
Upon subsequent starts, Nightly does appear to correctly load the tabs, whereas for my main Twitter profile and FF 83.0 no amount of restarts seems to help; instead I have to open another tab and open m.twitter.com in it, then click on the home button to have the home tabs load (and close the first, still stuck set of home tabs).

For me this seems to have resolved itself since Ubuntu-distributed Firefox was updated to 84, though for all I know, it may have just coincided with some change implemented at Twitter's end.

Closing as this is reportedly fixed as of Firefox 84. Please re-open if those same steps to reproduce still result in the described problem.

I have not seen the issue since switching to a new PC, so I cannot verify the fix.
I'll assume it was fixed.
