Every time I open up a livestream on YouTube my whole broswer slows down drastically. The thing is, that it doesn't happen with videos, doesn't happen on Twitch live streams etc. It only has problems with YouTube livestreams. The browser also slows down when I watch a past broadcast of a livestream.

I see there are two issues in the profile.

In the very beginning, there're a lot of even processing delays happening every couple of hundreds of miliseconds, and they seem well correlated with a DOM Event called yt-action which looks suspicious. I think I may have seen it before but I can't recall.

In addition to that, there're some long event processing delays in the middle which relates to some javascript which are triggered by fullscreen events.

I wonder if they are caused by an extension? Asif, do you mind to ask the reporter to try again with a clean profile ( they can create one via about:profiles )? And collect a new profile if the issue still persist. Thanks!

Do we have a good example video? A recorded YouTube stream with lots of chat would be very useful to have here, to get a consistent testcase that we can compare across browsers.

There are three long periods of jank in the parent process. At least one of them is caused by accessibility.

I have the same issue. YouTube livestreams essentially seem to slow down progressively until the chat stops, the video stops playing and firefox becomes unresponsive. Here's a profile https://share.firefox.dev/3dSH8yJ

I do not have any windows accessability options enabled, nor third party tools. My computer has a touchscreen. If there is any further information I can provide to help diagnose this bug I would be glad to provide it. Chrome on the same computer has no such issue so I do beleive this to be firefox specific. (or rather perhaps Google not optimizing for anything but Chrome)

I'm really confused by these profiles. They show a lot of time spent in PDocAccessible::Msg_FocusEvent, but not any calls inside that.

  1. Is this actually referring to DocAccessibleParent::RecvFocusEvent? That's where the actual implementation is. Or is this stuck in IPDL for some reason?
  2. If this were due to dispatching a11y events to Windows (and in-process clients blocking us while they get processed), I'd expect to be seeing NotifyWinEvent chewing a lot of time inside RecvFocusEvent. But that's not what we see here. RecvFocusEvent is otherwise pretty simple.
  3. I guess that suggests that we're just getting a huge number of a11y focus events from content? But if that were the case, I'd expect to see a11y blockage in the content process as well... but we don't.

:mstange, is there anything you can see that I'm missing here? I'm not great with using the profiler. :)

I see you were looking for a machine to reproduce this on. I have a Dell XPS 13 (7390). If there are any tests you'd like me to try or debug builds (With additional logging for anything that sticks out or why a11y may be enabled with the UNKNOWN flag) let me know. I'll leave any additional profiles or info at this unless requested, to not clog up the comments. As a side note this doesn't seem to effect Linux at all.

Unfortunately these profiles were captured without native stack walking. So we do not get full C++ stacks, we only get stacks of profiler label frames (from manual instrumentation), and of JavaScript frames. Native stack walking is off in the "Web Developer" profiling preset, but on in the "Firefox Platform" preset.

Tested in a fresh profile and without the add-on in my usual... that does seem to have been the issue. That's quite embarrassing. Apologies for not being able to provide any actual data on the real issue here. I've only tested it on one stream so far that is live but haven't noticed any slowness without that add-on. Not even sure why it would be using anything at all without interaction.
