File picker unpredictably freezes entire OS in macOS 10.14.6

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10.15; rv:78.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/78.0
Steps to reproduce:
- Open the file picker on any page and attempt to pick a file.
Actual results:
- Partway through the file-system navigation, the entire UI, not just for Firefox but for the whole OS, freezes. (For example, Dock animation stops mid-frame.) Although the freeze affects the entire OS, it only happens in Firefox.
Unfortunately, it is unpredictable—it doesn't happen every time, or always on the same site, or always with the same file.
Expected results:
- File picker should not freeze other UI.

Can you test the issue for a while in Safe Mode? You can find helpful info here : https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-firefox-issues-using-safe-mode .
Also a fresh new profile could help. You can find more about creating a new profile here : https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-and-diagnose-firefox-problems#w_6-create-a-new-firefox-profile .
If possible, you can test this issue on the nightly build as well. Download the build from : https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/nightly/all/ .

When this freeze occurs, what viewing mode is the file picker window in? Icons, List, Columns, Gallery? Does switching between them avoid the freeze?

I’ve been noticing this too. My finder is always in columns view. The freeze is unpredictable and doesn’t seem to reoccur on the same file picker (I guess I’m getting it about once a week for an average of 4-5 file uploads a week). The freeze usually lasts at least 30 seconds but I haven’t timed it. And like OP says, it’s a complete system freeze apart from the mouse pointer, but it recovers with normal behaviour and no crashes. Nothing obvious in Console that I could see.

This bug may be related to syncing. When I connect OneDrive and it begins a major sync, and I then attempt to attach a file to gmail that appears in finder as "cloud-stored", it freezes the filepicker and Firefox.
Google Chrome does not exhibit this same behavior, but tries and fails to upload the file.
Opening the file in MacOS 12.1 preview does not freeze either, it requests the file to download and hangs but you can cancel the download.
Killing OneDrive appears to resolve the issue for me.

I apologise for the long delay in responding. This issue was difficult to reproduce at best, and I have not had it recur for several months. It did not seem to be a syncing issue as @JohnCollins describes, but I cannot offer any better information on what it might have been.

Wonder if Chrome has an OOP file picker like we want to do on Windows?
Given the intermittency, I'm lowering this to S3.
