Attached image Failed Tabs, 2.jpg

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.3; Win64; x64; rv:82.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/82.0

Steps to reproduce:

I open nearly 200 bookmarks in incognito mode.

Actual results:

Most of the Getpocket articles fail to load. But the CPU usage is low. Before, Firefox 81, the CPU used to be 100%.

Expected results:

(1) All tabs should open properly, (2) CPU usage should be low.

When I load Peter Simonyi's Add-on, "Open Bookmarks Slowly," the problem goes away BUT this add-on is not actively monitored for security by Mozilla so I am wary of making it permanent.

Component: Untriaged → Pocket

No longer depends on: 1673363

I couldn't reproduce, but I might also be missing a step. I couldn't figure out how to load all items in my bookmarks as tabs, so I opened a bunch on by on and they all seemed to load fine.

Also not sure if this is an issue in firefox, getpocket.com, or both.

@Scott [:thecount] Downe:

Thank you for giving it a try. The sequence that I used was:

Bookmarks --> Show All Bookmarks --> Bookmarks Menu

Then you will see a bookmarks folder called:

TMP, 2020-10-20a

Right-click "Open All in Tabs" on that folder.

I have found that if I open 10 bookmarks at a time and wait for the CPU to settle, everything works great. BUT, if I right-click "Open All in Tabs" I get a lot of unopened Getpocket articles.

:thecount, could you have a look please?

I just downloaded and installed Firefox 83.0. When I open over 195 bookmarks, most of the Getpocket articles still fail to load. :(

Oh, oh... Not only do Getpocket articles fail to load, but now Peter Simonyi's add-on fails to load them!!

Test 1: I went to Ookla to check my internet speed. The download speed is about 25 Mbps.

When I try to load a bunch of tabs, most of the Getpocket articles fail to load.

Test 2: I connected the PC directly to router using a Cat6 ethernet cable. Ookla says that the download speed is about 560 Mbps.

When I try to load a bunch of tabs, ALL of the Getpocket articles load!!!

Test 3: Repeat Test 1. Result = Fail.

Test 4: Repeat Test 2, Result = Success!

Theory: Perhaps Getpocket articles timeout too soon with slow internet?

Now using Firefox 85.0. With gigabit speed, all tabs load properly, but the CPU is maxed out at 100%. Once again, if I open 5 tabs at a time the CPU is normal. I can't work like this.

I am unsure if this is a firefox issue or a getpocket.com issue, but the current component is for the save to Pocket button in the address bar, so should be moved to either. Going to try sending it to getpocket.com folks first.

I have a hunch this is, like you said, an issue with the timeout.

If you were to test this on chrome and be able to reproduce, it would signify this as an issue with getpocket.com and not firefox.

If running it on chrome doesn't have an issue, it's more likely an issue in how the firefox is recovering from opening lots of tabs.

@Scott [:thecount] Downe: I ran the following experiments twice for reproducibility...

EXPERIMENT #1:

Using slow internet and opening all tabs at once:

Firefox: 190 tabs, 58 did not open properly. Avg CPU 4%.

Chrome: 190 tabs, 15 did not open properly. Avg CPU 40%

EXPERIMENT #2:

Using fast internet and opening all tabs at once:

Firefox: 190 tabs. All tabs opened properly. Avg CPU 100% even after 2 hrs.

Chrome: 190 tabs. All tabs opened properly. Avg CPU 40%

EXPERIMENT #3:

Using slow internet and opening 5 tabs at a time AND waiting for CPU to settle:

Firefox: 190 tabs. All tabs opened properly. Avg CPU 25%.

Chrome: 190 tabs. All tabs opened properly. Avg CPU 30%

So either I take a lot of time and open 5 tabs at a time OR I open all tabs at once and work with a computer running 100% CPU. Both choices aren't palatable.

In experiment 1, how many of the 58 or 15 that did not open were getpocket.com pages? All of them? Are the 190 tabs a mix of getpocket.com and other pages?

In experiment 1, it looks like chrome did somewhat better here, Firefox's 4% CPU usage looks like a result of not fully loading 58 tabs, more than anything.

In experiment 2, all tabs loaded, so if any issue is present here, it's hard to tell if it's getpocket.com or not.
In experiment 3, all tabs loaded, so if any issue is present here, it's hard to tell if it's getpocket.com or not.

It would probably be interesting to see experiments where we compare loading lots of just getpocket.com vs lots of non getpocket.com pages.

My guess with this is, it's mostly a getpocket.com thing, and doesn't look like chrome did much significantly different, and even also failed to load some tabs. My assumption is the 15 tabs that chrome failed to load were all getpocket.com tabs, based on the context of this bug. If I'm wrong in that assumption, then this might just be mostly a browser thing, and in which case, is in the wrong component, and I'm the wrong person to be helping.

Just updated to Firefox 89.0. When I open 195 tabs several GetPocket articles do not load. However, of the ones that do load, the titles are gone! (see attached)
