Please add needed files for Latvian language and locale settings.
Language code is LV.
I got to this form from requesting new locale for Thunderbird, which is not available in https://pontoon.mozilla.org/

Note: the locale is not exactly in good shape at the moment, and Thunderbird relies on a lot of common strings that are exposed inside Firefox.

I've CCed the locale manager, hopefully he'll be able to help you out with the next steps in Pontoon. By default, without permissions, you would only be able to add new suggestions, not translations.

Hi,

Firstly I am super happy about anyone who wants to make any Mozilla product better.

If Valdis has enough time to contribute, we could set up Thunderbird and Lightning in Pontoon.

As a first step, I recommend Valdis to register on Pontoon and do a few strings for some of the existing Projects there. This will let me easily give him more permissions in the system, so his translations are accepted automatically without any need for approval. In Pontoon I have permissions settings where I can grand more permissions to contributors of Latvian.

After that if Valdis will want to continue, we can import Thunderbird and Lightning to Pontoon and keep going :)

I am open to other ideas as well.

Hi, Raivis!
First, thank you for your contribution in localization of many open source projects.
But I was surprised effort of Latvian localization community has not reached Thunderbird. I have used Evolution since 2008 as an open source alternative to Outlook to connect to MS Exchange servers. I changed my mind when I couldn't see (I could create them) events in local calendar synchronized with Google calendar and didn't see any progress to solve that issue for half a year. I tried Thunderbird with provider for Google calendar plugin, and it worked well.
I have translated only by myself GnuCash, VimTutor and XWiki CMS, so I have experience. I will not try to localize something else just to warm up, because I localize only applications I'm using (scratch my own itch).
I don't like editing in browser because it is slower than local application and don't allow me to look at overall state easily.
Can pontoon do export/import *.po files to edit them in poedit and gvim to search for patterns and inconsistencies?

Component: General → lv / Latvian
Product: Thunderbird → Mozilla Localizations
Summary: Add new locale to Thunderbird+Lightning → Add new locale Latvian (LV) to Thunderbird+Lightning in pontoon

If you would consider using Pontoon at some point in some capacity we can check with the Pontoon team about Import / Export options.

If you prefer to work with source files directly then check this http://docs.translatehouse.org/projects/translate-toolkit/en/latest/commands/moz2po.html
Mozilla does not use *.po files directly, but I have used *.po files converted from the original source files in past. Back then it worked 99% of time, but some manual actions were needed. As I remember process was not too easy :) It can be done but as I remember using Pontoon was much better.

One good thing that may change your mind is integration of whole project translation memory as well as online translation services. After seeing many different translation platforms I find Pontoon to be quite good.

If you decide to go with Pontoon , I will need at least one contribution in any other project so you show up in the list of users I have in the admin.

If you decide to work with source files directly, try googling for old Thunderbird localization info pages to see how to work with source files directly. I am sure people can give you hints if you decide to go this way.

Conversion to and from Gettext is not an option available in Pontoon. For once, there's no way for Gettext to support the complexity of Fluent strings, which Thunderbird also uses.

Translations should happen through Pontoon, not directly via source repositories. We have steered contributions away from that for a lot of reasons, including avoid unnecessary technical barriers and providing more transparency/control for contributors.

If you're OK, I can add Thunderbird and Lightning to Latvian. Then it's up to the Thunderbird team to manage adding the locale to builds, etc.

If you decide to go with Pontoon , I will need at least one contribution in any other project so you show up in the list of users I have in the admin.

In the admin panel you can search in all the registered users (right above the list) instead of just active contributors.

Hi, all!
I made some translations https://pontoon.mozilla.org/contributors/O6niqqPjFqZB7rVb5W8UbmvYrLU/
Will wait, when Thunderbird will appear in list of projects.
Thanks!

Valdis, I have added you as translator to Latvian team. You can now add and approve translations for all products available. In case you see any issue you want to fix in some of them :)

Thunderbird and Lightning Will appear on Pontoon shortly.

Welcome to the team and if you have any questions feel free to email me orvils at gmail :)

Projects added. As said, note that:

  • Adding to build depends on the Thunderbird team
  • Thunderbird uses strings from toolkit, and those are in Firefox
