I was considering marking this bug confidential, which would allow me to attach some specs. However since we are about to add this to the public Mozilla source, I didn't want to file a commercial-only bug.

jbetek, first, you can't mark this bug confidential. Confidential bugs don't belong in Bugzilla (with the exception of security confidential bugs and this isn't a security issue). Second, what is this and why is it in Bugzilla at all?
from the looks of it, the patch affects mozilla code. simply put i hope that the final patch doesn't include functions whose names contain 'AOL', one possible replacement is 'External', but i'm sure someone can find a better term. also you probably meant compliant with AOL spec, not complaint with AOL spec. :-)
Asa, this bug is part of the MRE implementation. That's why it's in Bugzilla J AOL as one of the potential future users of MRE has recognized the need to send progress bar updates to an external installer. This hasn’t been considered in the initial design and since any distributor of MRE-dependent apps might have this need, we could try to come up with a generic solution. I've posted a functional (read: preliminary) patch we hacked together for AOL. Unfortunately, I can't really post the specs to aid with the design discussion since AOL considers them confidential. I’ve posted a test app emulating an external installer to demonstrate their approach.
timeless: I agree, and there are more typos (e.g. "intergration"); it was a late-night hack. I very much hope that we'll be able to check in a generic solution along the lines of AOL's proprietary approach.

Summary: Update AOL installer progress bar, if a proxy DLL is found → Update external installer progress bar, if a proxy DLL is found
err jbetak, could you explain 1) why this is invalid 2) why you changed the patch descriptions to nothing 3) changed the content-type to text/html which is wrong as the attachment clearly is not html 4) un-cc'd timeless and alex bishop?
Christian, I meant this bug to be confidential, which is no longer possible in Bugzilla. Subsequent communication indicated that we don't want to have this in the open and that the bug will be removed from Bugzilla. We might open a new bug with a sanitized generic external installer integration spec.
