Details

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10.14; rv:82.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/82.0

Steps to reproduce:

I am using a 2010 Mac Pro running macOS Mojave 10.14.6 with all security updates installed. My system has 96GB of RAM and the system drive is a Samsung 970 Pro that is installed in a Highpoint SSD7101A PCIe nVME controller, so I doubt this is some kind of resource issue. I do not see this problem at all on the other Mac models that I own.

I browse web pages as normal and there are frequent system freezes. This has occurred going back to at least Firefox version 79.

Actual results:

Firefox freezes the entire system with the exception of moving the mouse pointer (but nothing in the UI responds to clicks or mouseover) for a period of about 30–60 seconds at seemingly random intervals, but it occurs most often when loading pages with video content. If Console is already open when a freeze occurs, the logs also seem to freeze. Eventually, the system unfreezes and returns to normal operation as if nothing unusual happened.

Numerous users have reported this problem in this forum thread:

Expected results:

No freeze.

Thank you for filing this :matthew.penna.
Can you please capture a profile of this when this happens and add it to the bug:

:acreskey, thanks for following up. I'll try to reproduce this and will capture a profile as soon as I am able to.

Hey Matthew, did you manage to get started with profiling as described in the previous comment? Let me know if you need any help!

Hi Victor, this problem has disappeared. It might have been fixed by a subsequent Firefox update or by a macOS Mojave update. For the last 6 weeks or so, I have been unable to reproduce it.

There will probably be another Mojave security update released alongside Big Sur 11.2 in the coming days, which may or may not reintroduce the problem, so I will see how things look after that and will report back.

Lets close as worksforme for now. But when it happens again please provide the gecko profile, and we can reopen the bug. Thanks.
