User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; Win64; x64; rv:83.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/83.0

Steps to reproduce:

The computer that I'm logged into is not showing the sync tab so that I can recover the lost tabs.

Actual results:

Here are the screenshots of the issue.
https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1312258

The laptop ZBook 17 G2 dual boots Win7 and openSUSE Tumbleweed.

Win7 machine name is - ZBook-17-G2
Tumbleweed machine name is - ZBook-17-G2-Tumbleweed

I have lost my tabs several times in openSUSE Tumbleweed

Expected results:

When I go to the View Synced Tab Sidebar to look for ZBook-17-G2-Tumbleweed it's not there, but if I log into Win7 I can see the machine name ZBook-17-G2-Tumbleweed.

It appears to me that no matter what machine I log into, that machine name is not seen in the sync tab, I have to log onto another machine to see the machine that I'm looking for.

In this screenshot I'm logged into Win 7 and can see the linux machine, but cannot see the Win7 machine.

I only have 1 Firefox account and multiple laptops. The issue is showing on all computers, I cannot see the name of the computer that I'm currently logged into in the Sync Tab to recover any lost tabs.

Bugbug thinks this bug should belong to this component, but please revert this change in case of error.

Component: Untriaged → Sync

I cannot see the name of the computer that I'm currently logged into in the Sync Tab to recover any lost tabs.

This behaviour is deliberate - the "synced tabs" feature is for showing tabs that you currently have open on other devices, and is not designed for viewing historical tabs from the current device. If we showed the current device in that list, it would only display the tabs that you currently have open, which doesn't seem useful.

Could you please say more about your use-case here? There may be some other better way to achieve what you want. From your comments:

It sounds like maybe you're looking to do something like:

  • Have a bunch of tabs open in Firefox in your machine "Tumbleweed"
  • Reboot into a different OS, do other stuff there for a while.
  • Boot back into "Tumbleweed", open Firefox and recover the tabs you had open from last time.

Does that sound accurate? If so, this sounds like something that's better served by the "restore previous session" feature rather than synced tabs.

Okay... I go between Win 7 and Tumbleweed on this ZBook and I have a bunch of tabs open in both environments with different machine names and have had no issue because the browser always restored my session, but for the past month I have repeatedly lost my tabs in Tumbleweed.
When I log into my Tumbleweed or any machine and see that my 30+ tabs are gone. What are my options?

By the time I look in the browser and notice that my tabs are gone, the sync process would have run and synced just the 1 tab from my Tumble weed machine to my other devices. Again... my tabs are gone.

That link about Restore Previous Session is clearly from an older version of Firefox. I have always had the option set in the settings to restore the previous session.

I have a bunch of tabs open in both environments with different machine names and have had no issue because the
browser always restored my session, but for the past month I have repeatedly lost my tabs in Tumbleweed.

Sounds like this may be a problem with the session-restore functionality, I'm going to move this to the "Session Restore" component and hopefully someone more familiar with that functionality can help you out.

Component: Sync → Session Restore

I think that Sync needs a bit more logic instead of just syncing automatically because if there was a prompt before syncing I could have retrieved my tabs from another machine. But, now that I now what I'm dealing with you can close this.

This issue with Firefox reminded me that I can't recall having a tab issue in Chrome. ;-(

From looking at several issues in the forum related to Sync, I think you guys need to re-think Sync!

You need to log in before you can comment on or make changes to this bug.
