Steps to reproduce:
- Visit amazon.com
- Disable built in Amazon search engine in preferences (uncheck the engine)
- Open new tab
- Type
ama
What happens:
Firefox prompts user to search using Amazon.com (see screenshot).
Expected result:
Firefox should not suggest searching with Amazon because it has been disabled as an engine.
I find this feature very distracting and there’s no obvious way to disable it.

The result is so tall just because it's in "onboarding mode", just selecting it a few times (3 exactly, at a distance of 5 minutes each) will make it normal size, or you can set browser.urlbar.tabToSearch.onboard.interactionsLeft = 0 in about:config (that is the same thing in practice).
Disabling the engine by unchecking its checkbox is actually only hiding the shortcut button at the bottom of the panel. I know, the preferences are not easy to understand, we are aware of that.
It's not actually possible in 83 to disable these suggestions, unless you completely remove the engine, so if you don't ever search amazon, you can remove it as a search engine (select the engine and click Remove in about:preferences).
We are discussing of ways to allow disabling the tab-to-search feature on an engine basis though, and that work is happening in bug 1678138, thus I'm duping this bug there.
