Details

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64; rv:84.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/84.0

Steps to reproduce:

Automatically restore last session on opening Firefox

Actual results:

Multiple password prompts as various pages complete loading. Stealing focus and input from browser windows, address bar, search panel multiple times.

Expected results:

After first password prompt is cancelled/refused further popups should be blocked for a reasonable length of time and there should NEVER be multiple prompts on top of each other.

This is particularly infuriating if the site generating most of the prompts is one that I have already signed into and appears to be triggering the password manager pointlessly.

Bugbug thinks this bug should belong to this component, but please revert this change in case of error.

Component: Untriaged → Session Restore

Hey Mackie,
I tried reproducing this issue on the latest versions of Firefox Nightly 86.0a1 (2021-01-08), beta 85.0b6 and release 84.0.2 but I can't seem to receive any multiple triggers for password prompts. Could you detail the steps a little more please?

Can you test the issue while in Safe Mode? You can find helpful info here : https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-firefox-issues-using-safe-mode .
Also a fresh new profile could help. You can find more about creating a new profile here : https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-and-diagnose-firefox-problems#w_6-create-a-new-firefox-profile .
If possible, you can test this issue on the nightly build as well. Download the build from : https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/nightly/all/ .

I don't know about " Stealing focus and input", but what I see is when a tab has a password prompt pending, it can cause other tabs to that website to not respond. Not having feedback is problematic.

What seems to be happening is that as Firefox starts loading tabs on a session restore, individual tabs request a password once whey have loaded enough.

I have had occasions when typing a search term in the search box or a response in a forum where the password prompt for a tab in the background opens while I am attempting to type in this other field. When this happens the password prompt takes precedence and I find myself suddenly typing in a password field instead of the original field. If sites in background windows or tabs are taking varying times to load this can result in a frustrating experience where I have to retype the same thing multiple times if I deny the password prompts. I think this is exacerbated by poor handling of the login functionality in a particular site, but as the "Password Required" prompts don't identify the tab that requested them I can't be entirely sure.

In restarting Firefox while composing this response, I have not managed to produce prompt windows at the same time, but I have seen them come back quickly enough that I may have mistaken repeated prompting for stacked windows when on a faster connection (especially if focused on something else). The behaviour seems to be the same in safe mode.
