STR:

  1. Ensure you are logged into a Google account.
  2. In Firefox, visit https://meet.new to create a new Google Meet call

ER:

Google Meet should ask for the microphone and camera devices simultaneously like it does in Chromium browsers and Safari.

AR:

Google Meet first asks for the microphone permission. After it has received a response, it then asks for the camera permission.

Interestingly, if I set my UA string to:

Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10.15; rv:86.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/86.0

Google Meet will happily ask for both devices. This might be a question of reaching out to the Google Meet developers and have them ask for both devices simultaneously.

Hey jib, do you know why Meet might be doing this for Firefox specially?

Thanks for testing this! I've reached out to the Meet team for clarification.

We've determined that the multiple prompts is due to the Meet team trying to avoid even more prompts (since Firefox re-asks for a device even if a site had just had access to it).

We think we can probably improve the behaviour here to reduce permission spam, but we'll track that work in a separate bug blocking bug 1678750.

Closing as FIXED.
