Are you referring to a task? Or a calendar event?
Somehow related to Bug 1686466 ?

Additional information for you.
I also find some tasks that I have marked completed popping up with a new reminder every day.
I'll leave the current problem one in case you want to do any tracing.

Lesley, can you still reproduce the behavior with the most recent release, Thunderbird 78.8.0?

I have installed v 78.8. I haven't got multiple reminders now, but I may still have reminders for things I did mark completed yesterday. I'll get back to you tomorrow to see if the latter is still true.

This morning I have 4 reminders, 3 for the same thing due on 28th Feb (not marked completed but marked for 'snooze').
So problem has not gone away.

In the Calendar preferences do you have "Show missed reminders for writable calendars" enabled?
Try it with that setting disabled.
I would think if I "Dismiss" or "Dismiss All" those would still be missed reminders because they were not edited to "No Reminder".
I'm not that familiar with recurring events.

Hi WaltS48
I tried as you suggested, and only have one reminder for each this morning when I had about 30 in total yesterday.
Good suggestion. Fingers crossed that does fix it.

Hi Again WaltS48
All seemed fine initially, but now I seem to be getting no reminders for repeating events that have been marked as completed in the past. For instance, I have three tasks today that happen either monthly or weekly, and have received no reminders for them today (until I unticked "Show Missed Reminders....". They aren't missed reminders, they were due today!
So this isn't a fix that works.

Came here to report the same bug and found this ticket.
I've also been seeing the duplicate reminders bug but for recurring calender events (I'm not using tasks). The calenders where I see the problem seem to be from google calendar, ie the location is something like "googleapi://[gmail_address]/?calendar=[gmail_address]".
One other thing is that if I click "dismiss" for one of the duplicates, they are all dismissed.
Here's a bit of the troubleshooting information:
Name: Thunderbird
Version: 78.14.0
Build ID: 20210901192859
Distribution ID:
User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:78.0) Gecko/20100101 Thunderbird/78.14.0
OS: Linux 5.11.0-40-generic
Provider for Google Calendar
78.0.2
true

Hope this is helpful, please ask for more details if you need any.

I have just started using Thunderbird and I am seeing this behaviour. I don't use Tasks and only have a single email account added, which is a gmail, and I have multiple (but not all) of my Google Calendars enabled. Any calendar event with a notification set in Google Calendar triggers at least 2 simultaneous reminders in Thunderbird, the most I've seen so far is 6, and clicking Dismiss on a single one clears all duplicates for that event. I haven't paid attention as to whether this only happens with recurring calendar events or all events.

For techy info.
I looked into this yesterday as I was seeing the same behaviour and found that some of my repeating tasks were showing 'Multiple Reminders' and had 12 instances of 'The moment the task starts' in the reminder details box. I usually only ever select '0 minutes before'.
Hope this helps.

Thanks for the suggestion. I've just checked and the event that had 4 simultaneous reminders yesterday is showing the same reminder settings as in my Google Calendar app, which are all different times apart. I had another recurring calendar event appear today (from a different Google Calendar on the same account) but Thunderbird only showed a single reminder, so this issue seems very intermittent.

I have the same problem. I am using the caldav from mailbox.org. I get even more reminders if I use thunderbird on different devices. It looks like this is related to timeout of the calendar syncing.

I also have multiple reminders, for calendar events (I am not using tasks).
I think this may happen because I have requested successive reminders.
I am using Google's calendar, with plugin "Provider for Google Calendar" 115.3.0:
https://addons.thunderbird.net/en-US/thunderbird/addon/provider-for-google-calendar/
I have Thunderbird 115.7.0 (64-bit) but this has been happening for a long time.
I happens both on Linux and on Windows versions.
I am using Thunderbird in French language (screenshots are done after setting to English).
What I understand is the following:
- I create an event and set successive reminders (example with 3 reminders: 7 days before, 1 day before, 1 hour before)
- when the reminder first appears, a click on "Dismiss" makes it disappear
- when the 2nd reminder appears, two copies are displayed, a click on "Dismiss" makes both copies disappear
- when the 3rd reminder appears, 3 copies are displayed, a click on "Dismiss" makes all of them disappear
I am trying to add screenshots it I can

147.0.2 with a remote DAV calendar. I've found that if the "Reminders" dialog is up with any reminders that haven't been explicitly snoozed, then every time the DAV calendar syncs (i.e. every 30 minutes), it re-pings and re-focuses the reminders dialog, as if the reminder just fired. Thus...it will ping over and over for the same reminder unless you explicitly dismiss or snooze (or close the dialog, which internally snoozes).
It should not re-fire the reminder just because the calendar synced.
