(Whiteboard: [add-on idea])
In 4.5, we added search/filter prefs for user-customizable headers. It would be
nice to expand the use of these custom headers to include the compose window
(in the to/cc/bcc menu) and the envelope display area (in the View menu).
So (IMO) we should not rewrite the search/filter UI to add/delete custom
headers. We should put that UI in a central place in prefs and then use it where
we can.

Fix dependencies
Comment 2•25 years ago
|

What I want to be able to customize for each newsgroup are things like:
- Username (may need to mangle it in some groups because of spam)
- Default headers for outgoing mail (Distribution:, X-No-Archive:, etc.)
- Position of quoted text (above or below) when replying (some groups care)

John, the bug system works best if bugs are narrowly defined. The issues for
username and quoted text belong in their own bugs.
I also fixed the dependencies; 16925 depends on this bug, not the other way
around.

By the way, for interoperability with the 4.5+ product, you should probably
reuse the Javascript preference "mailnews.customHeaders" which contains a
comma-separated list of headers to add. mscott@netscape.com added that stuff in
4.5

This is needed for filters to be usable. Adding nsbeta2 for consideration.

I'm not entirely sure what this bug is about as the description suggests more
than the summary but I use customisable header filtering and I would need this
in a mailnews reader before I used it. 4xp keyword?

Matthew, I think 16902 is the real 4xp bug, although this foundation would be
required, hence the dependency.

Nomination for mozilla1.0. Many advanced users want this.

Would I be right is assuming this feature includes adding a mail header such as
Sender to outgoing e-mails?
If so, would it be possible to consider having a customizable 'default' list of
headers that is set seperatly for each account, i.e. so sending from one mail
account has one set of customized headers, while a different account has a
different set?

This claims to block bug 16902 which is now FIXED. Was this work done in the
patches for bug 16902 (in which case this too should be FIXED, referencing the
patch from 16902) ?
I'm not sure that the behaviour discussed in this bug is particularly desirable.
Personally I want to filter on List-Id, which MUST NOT be set in outgoing mail
by a user agent, and SHOULD NOT be present in news, so it would be useless to me
to see that custom header in those additional places.
But there are 6 votes for this functionality, so someone out there wants it.

Shouldn't this bug be blocked by bug 16925 and the other way around?
I state this as 16925 can be completed completly without this bug and has a
patch waiting. All that needs to be defined is then what the perf is that sets
user defined headers and that could be decided wherever.
Maybe I'm missing something?

I'd ideally like to be able to put the custom header in a list column as well.
I could then, for instance, sort on it in the view.

rkent interprets "this is asking to expand features that already work in search and filter (via mailnews.customHeaders and mailnew.customDBHeaders) to other areas." and is a worthy idea for an add-on.
any objections to removing the dependencies, which don't seem to have been accurate? i.e bug 61523, bug 61520, bug 16902, bug 16913, bug 16925
