[Tracking Requested - why for this release]: Printing regression in high-profile website.
Hi Erik, thanks for reporting this! I couldn't reproduce using the outlook web app so far, but maybe that's not the right URL?
We have a somewhat similar report when web fonts are used in PDF (bug 1685670), but that requires special settings and is specific to printing a PDF, so this one seems totally different (and more worrying). Few questions:
- Can you reproduce on a clean profile? (You can create and launch one from
about:profilesfor testing, then delete it) - Can you reproduce on a Nightly build? (https://nightly.mozilla.org)
- Can you reproduce on regular outlook.com or does this need a managed OWA install? (If it repros on outlook.com I could try to repro this on Mac or what not... Otherwise I guess we'd need access somehow to reproduce this, I can check if we have contacts or something else that could repro it).
If you had the time (no worries if not, understandable!) and the answer to the first question is "yes", but the last one is "no", it'd be extremely helpful if you could try to run mozregression to see what broke it for you. If you execute it like this:
mozregression --good 84 --profile-persistence reuse -a <your-office365-url>
It should take you around 15 minutes, and it'd be immensely helpful.
Thanks!
Hi Emilio, I have created a new profile which produces the same rectangular characters in the "Subject" Text in Outlook. For the first test I used my Outlook365 from my work. Today I have used my private Outlook.com account at https://outlook.live.com/owa/ with the same results of rectangular characters in the "Subject" Text.
FF 84.0.2 works without any problem and the rectangular characters in the "Subject" text are introduced with FF 85.0 and continuous at FF 86.0b5
BTW: There is no difference between printing the e-mail to PDF or to my Postscript HP printer.
I have installed the latest 86.0b5 version at my second MacBook with the same results. The used fonts in the messages are: .SFNS Text, Apple Color Emoji, Helvetica, LastResorts (Rectangular characters) and Times-Roman. Perhaps the page https://www.macobserver.com/link/lastresort-mac-font/ could give a hint how unknown characters are handled. More info at https://github.com/unicode-org/last-resort-font
I checked the PDF document of Bug 1685670 and could not see any problems during printing this specific PDF file.

So I tried to repro this on macOS, and I couldn't, which is kind of a bummer :(
But I'm on big sur so maybe your OSX version influences this. Jonathan, do you happen to have a 10.14 machine around?
Erik, 85.0b6 should have a preview dialog, does the preview show the right fonts?

This looks like a dupe of bug 1690235, in which case a fix has just landed in Nightly. In the meantime, a workaround is to set layout.css.font-variations.enabled to false in about:config.
Erik, could you confirm that the problem goes away if you change that setting?
Hi Jonathan, I have set the preference "layout.css.font-variations.enabled" from TRUE into FALSE and the problem with the rectangular characters is solved with FF85.0 at MacOS Mojave 10.14.6 (see also my previous bugreport 1690289)
Successfully tested with Outlook Web Access at https://outlook.live.com/owa/ and https://outlook.office365.com
Many thanks! ...I will delete Microsoft Edge at my mac-mini and continue with FF

Great - thanks for letting us know. I'll close this as a duplicate of bug 1690235, where the problem has just been fixed so that the workaround of disabling font variations will no longer be needed. (That fix should appear in Firefox 87, or we may be able to include it in 86.)
