As of today all crucial bugs have been fixed in Mutter / Gnome-Shell, so things should work from 40.1 on. Fixes might get backported to the 3.38/3.36 branches.

wlroots and KWin are not yet able to start the example compositor.

According to bug 1711266 comment 10 things now run on Kwin as well
