User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10.15; rv:86.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/86.0

Steps to reproduce:

have virtual German keyboard installed. open FIrefox. Type Füssli into the "Home Page" "Search The Web" box. The umlaut is recognized and the search is performed. Now go to the "Search" box at the top and try to type Füssli - but you can't. The virtual keyboard is not recognized in this Search box.

Actual results:

The virtual keyboard is not recognized in the top "Search" box when attempting to type special characters, such as umlaut letters in German.

Expected results:

As it works in the "Search The Web" Home Page box, it should also work in the top "Search" box.

The Bugbug bot thinks this bug should belong to the 'Firefox::Address Bar' component, and is moving the bug to that component. Please revert this change in case you think the bot is wrong.

Component: Untriaged → Address Bar

Mistake - it is not a virtual German keyboard that is installed. The special characters are part of the Mac OS (Catalina in this case). All you have to do is to hold down a key and a list of alternate punctuation comes up in a numbered list. Then you type the number of the letter you want. Examples include é, Ü, ø, etc.

Can you test the issue while in Safe Mode? You can find helpful info here : https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-firefox-issues-using-safe-mode .
Also a fresh new profile could help. You can find more about creating a new profile here : https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-and-diagnose-firefox-problems#w_6-create-a-new-firefox-profile .
If possible, you can test this issue on the nightly build as well. Download the build from : https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/nightly/all/ .

In safe mode with a new profile, the problem is resolved. Restarting in "normal" mode with the default profile now works as expected.

Moving to Search per the "Search" description of the input in comment 0. I can reproduce it: The search dropdown appears in front of macOS's native alternate character picker. I'm not sure what we can do about that. IIRC there's an attribute on popups that controls the level of the popup, i.e., whether it appears below or above other popups/windows, so maybe we can use that.

This isn't a problem in the urlbar. The character picker appears above the urlbar view, probably because the view is just a div in the window.
