Last night I got the following error in my system log for the umpteen-hundredth time and suddenly smooth text rendering died: Sep 21 23:12:09 localhost /Applications/Mozilla 1.1/Mozilla.app/Contents/MacOS/Mozilla: *** Warning: ATSUMeasureText has been deprecated. Use ATSUGetUnjustifiedBounds instead. *** Is there an upper limit to the number of time Jaguar will support deprecated calls? If so, I am not surpried that this struck Mozilla first as it's the program I use most.
I'm using OS 10.2.1, Mozilla 1.1 20020826
Depends on: 162221

Jaguar (10.2) introduced a new system call (ATSUGetUnjustifiedBounds), and will print a warning whenever you use the older ATSUMeasureText. Mozilla 1.1 was released before Jaguar was released (1 week earlier), so that's why we're still using the older call. It's not an error btw, Apple just prints a warning in the errorlog. I'm not sure what the consequences are of using the old one, but I don't expect that "text-smoothing would have died immediately". That's something else. *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of 161332 ***

Uh... never mind :-[ this was actually because the 10.2.1 update reset my "Turn off text smoothing for font size X and below" setting in General Preferences back up to 10 pts.
Resolution: DUPLICATE → INVALID
