User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64; rv:89.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/89.0

Steps to reproduce:

Open Library.

Actual results:

Fonts or font rendering differs on the same page. Font is blurry.

Expected results:

Font rendering or family should be the same. In my case it should not be blurry. In main Firefox browser all fonts are ok - not blurry. I suspect one of this problem - either font family is not the same (form eample Segoe UI on my system is always blury - but not Tahoma), or font rendering differs.

The Bugbug bot thinks this bug should belong to the 'Firefox::Bookmarks & History' component, and is moving the bug to that component. Please revert this change in case you think the bot is wrong.

This setting gfx.font_rendering.cleartype_params.force_gdi_classic_max_size may explain the bad rendering, but I'm not expert on fonts rendering, thus I'm forwarding the question

Flags: needinfo?(jfkthame)

I have set gfx.font_rendering.cleartype_params.force_gdi_classic_max_size to display small letters using GDI Classic (result - sharp text - Tahoma looks 1:1) - and on main Mozilla window (menus, tabs, html page - everything works as expected) - but not at Bookmarks & History panel..

Hi Ernestas,

Unfortunately I was not able to reproduce this issue on Windows 10 x64 using Firefox release 88.0 and Nightly 90.0a1.
Could you please try this after disabling all addons and also start with a fresh profile to see whether the issue still persists?
Setting the component, if this is not the correct one please move it to right one.

Thanks.

Yes, I can confirm, that after restarting Firefox in troublshoot mode - fonts in Bookmarks & History panle looks OK - not blurry.

No no, it's ok ONLY in troublshoot mode.

if it work in Safe Mode, it means some of your settings are breaking Firefox rendering. Did you try unsetting the force_gdi_classic_max_size pref and see if it makes a change? Or make it smaller, 100 is a huge value, I know people used to set it to 6 or such. I personally prefer to leave things at default and use the Windows Cleartype tool to find a perfect setting for me.

Setting force_gdi_classic_max_size to 6 didn't helped.. I think the problem is somewhere deeper. If I would know how to change that panel font rendering or font type - would experiment. But it's hardcoded?

The problem is that on the same window - fonts are different - or font rendering differs. This is not good.

Re-opening, as I don't think the issue is really understood/resolved properly. My guess is that it may be related to webrender, and that Safe Mode disables WR and therefore makes the problem go away.

Ernestas, if you go to about:config and set the preference gfx.webrender.force-disabled to true, and then restart the browser (but not in Troubleshooting mode), does that resolve the problem for you?

I can reproduce the issue on Nightly90.0a1 Windows10. And disabling WebRender(i.e, Compositing Direct3D 11 or Basic) fixes the issue.

Bingo - I can confirm also - setting gfx.webrender.force-disabled to true fixes the problem. So what will be next steps?

So apparently webrender isn't consistently using the same font rendering settings as non-WR. Lee probably knows more about how that works...

The same problem was on Thunderbird also: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1689845
