Details
User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64; rv:88.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/88.0
Steps to reproduce:
Press Ctrl-D to save a bookmark and wait 3+ seconds
Actual results:
The URL autosaves to the last folder I last saved a bookmark in. No wonder I kept finding links in my bookmarks in locations where they don't belong. This has been going on for several versions (months?), I only actually noticed it today. It may even be a 'feature', but I'm reporting it as a bug because it screws up peoples' bookmarks management.
Expected results:
Nothing

The Bugbug bot thinks this bug should belong to the 'Firefox::Bookmarks & History' component, and is moving the bug to that component. Please revert this change in case you think the bot is wrong.

It is getting worse?? Today I noticed: press Ctrl-D and this immediately give the top right blue popup 'Save to library'. The dialog where to save does not even come up?
And yes, the item gets bookmarked in the last folder used.
IIRC No FireFox updates since my original report, and still running on Win10 (not mentioned in original report)
Hi Jan,
I have tried to reproduce the issue with on Windows 10, on Firefox Nightly 90.0a1 (2021-05-05) (64-bit) and Release 88.0.1 (64-bit) versions, but I couldn't reproduce it on my end.
Could you answer the following questions in order to further investigate this issue?
- Can you try to reproduce it with a new profile? Here is a link on how to create a new profile: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/profile-manager-create-remove-switch-firefox-profiles
Also, can you check the issue while in Safe Mode? You can find helpful info here : https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-firefox-issues-using-safe-mode.
- Does this issue occur in the latest nightly version of firefox? Here is a link from where you can download it: https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/channel/desktop/
If you are still able to reproduce it, please, share further information with us, like screenshots, screen recording, or more specific steps.
Regards.

Happens in troubleshooting (safe) mode: Yes
Happens with a new profile: Yes
Just before starting this FireFox updated to 88.0.1 so I have not taken the trouble of getting the nightly build
The video at https://youtu.be/JB0A615w8B8 shows the following:
(Default startup mode, All websites never visited before)
- Before the video I went to a dog food site, saved the bookmark in folder __test
- I went to a cat food site and at 0:03 press Ctrl-D. You immediately see the 'Saved to library' at the top right
- At 0:11 you can see that it landed in __test
The 'Saved to library' appeared 1-2 seconds later when using the new profile, in normal mode it's almost immediate when pressing Ctrl-D (although before my Comment 2 it also took a few seconds).
Note: I have a lot of bookmarks (approx. 6700 counted in the JSON export), up to 5 levels deep)

Ouch, stupid typo in comment 4: It does NOT happen with a new profile.
Sorry,
Jan
Hi Jan,
Thanks for all the provided information. Can you try if this issue still occurs in the latest nightly version of firefox? Here is a link from where you can download it: https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/channel/desktop/
Thanks in advance.
Regards,
Jerónimo.

This is actually a duplicate of the existing bug 1691729 - that uses clicking of the star button, but the effect is the same.

Installed nightly build 90.0a1 (2021-05-11).
This also auto-saves after approx 3 seconds.
I then signed in with my FireFox account and waited 10 minutes for all syncing to be completed.
This still auto-saves after approx 3 seconds.
So this seems to be slightly different behavior: the delay back is consistent, it no longer saves immediately

BTW I thought I had deleted my comment 4, because that was incorrect, but it's still there. Disregard it.

It is NOT a duplicate of 1691729, especially with the behavior now being to save immediately - see the comments over there.

Suspecting the PhraseExpress software (https://www.phraseexpress.com/), I uninstalled that. Now the 'immediate' saving of the bookmark seems to be gone, I have the 3 second delay back. FireFox is still at 88.0.1
