Details

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Ubuntu; Linux x86_64; rv:88.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/88.0

Steps to reproduce:

typed in the first few characters of an address. I've purged the site and all related sites from my history using the "forget this site" button. I've also tried highlighting the entry in the address bar dropdown using the down button and deleting it by pressing "delete" and "shift+delete," done all of these a number of times and rebooted in between, etc.

Actual results:

the address autocomplete entry is still the first thing to come up even though I haven't visited it in a decade, haven't bookmarked it ever, haven't pinned it ever, and deleted the site using the multiple methods described above.

Expected results:

it shouldn't come up anymore, according to firefox's own help pages. People have been reporting this issue on forums since 2015. All the issues on bugzilla related to this are marked "resolved," but this is clearly not resolved.

The Bugbug bot thinks this bug should belong to the 'Firefox::Address Bar' component, and is moving the bug to that component. Please revert this change in case you think the bot is wrong.

Are you talking about the feature where Firefox automatically finishes what you're typing in the address bar? Do you have any bookmarks that share the same domain?

Hey Jacobs,
I tried reproducing this issue on the latest versions of Firefox Nightly 90.0a1 (2021-05-07), Beta 89.0b9 and release 88.0.1 but once the sites have been purged they won't be autofilled.

Can you test the issue while in Safe Mode? You can find helpful info here : https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-firefox-issues-using-safe-mode .
Also a fresh new profile could help. You can find more about creating a new profile here : https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-and-diagnose-firefox-problems#w_6-create-a-new-firefox-profile .
If possible, you can test this issue on the nightly build as well. Download the build from : https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/nightly/all/ .

Can you test the issue while in Safe Mode?

I did on several devices, same issue.

If possible, you can test this issue on the nightly build as well.

Nightly is my daily driver.

Also a fresh new profile could help.

I've fully uninstalled Firefox a number of times and tried removing the profile a number of times. Every time I resync with my account, the same issue comes up again. Plus, this happens on all of my devices. And I would prefer not to erase my whole sync account and passwords and all, so I don't want to go much further than this.

Nope, that's the first thing I checked

I wasn't able to find any bookmarks with the URL in question, or anything similar, in my library, but deleting all of my bookmarks resolved the issue for some reason?

It's possible something got out of sync internally in the bookmarks/history database. It's hard to say at this point. Also, I want to be clear that if you have any bookmark that has the domain -- the exact URL doesn't matter, only the domain -- then that domain will autofill. Regardless, if it happens again then please let us know, especially if you can get some steps to reproduce it, thanks.

I kinda came to the conclusion that I'm just really bad at searching for things in the bookmark window, which is probably why clearing the bookmarks worked. I searched for the domain, nothing came up, but there's plenty of room for user error there. I cleared out the sync folder so I'm not sure exactly what caused it and can't check again. But I marked it invalid assuming it was user error, so I wouldn't spend much more time investigating this honestly.
