Sidebar of Mozilla is cool. But unfortunately most syndicated news headlines
come in RSS-format and not as Sidebars. Face it!

I tried to load some RSS-file to sidebar directly via this URL:

http://dirt.netscape.com/cgi-bin/sidebar.cgi?title=kuro5hin&URL=http://www.kuro5hin.org/backend.rdf

This is how it looks like:

http://people.cc.jyu.fi/~juhtolv/tmp/bugreports/mozilla/mozilla_rss_bug.png

More information about RSS and RDF can be found here:

http://www.cc.jyu.fi/~juhtolv/links/bk2site/html/H-N/INTERNET/WWW/RSS/index.html
is the site sending RSS/RDF content also sending a proper MIME type (not
text/plain) ?
http://www.kuro5hin.org/backend.rdf MIME type is text/plain, not sure if this is
correct.
http://dirt.netscape.com/cgi-bin/sidebar.cgi?title=RSS+Test&URL=http://flare.solareclipse.net/ContentIslands/1/rss10.xml

Served as text/xml

http://dirt.netscape.com/cgi-bin/sidebar.cgi?title=RSS+Test&URL=http://flare.solareclipse.net/rss10.rdf

Served as application/rss+xml, assuming that's correct.

This, of course, assumes that the sidebar is supposed to read RSS natively...
This person wanted to create Sidebar-application for reading RSS-feeds:

http://rsszilla.mozdev.org/

But there is nothing to download, yet. It seems really dead project.
This is kinda same bug:

http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=66054
I'd say this was dependent - even if mozilla can interpret RSS, will need to do
something special for the sidebar.

confirming as an RFE.

I was just reading Dave Hyatt's weblog. He was talking about RSS aggregators
and the browser. I'm the owner of the RSSzilla project, but I never really got
started on it. I'm considering working on it again, but I really could use some
help.

I guess, XSLT could help there. See bug 194351.
This is for bookmarked RSS:

- you bookmark an RSS feed
- the add bookmark window asks if this is an RSS feed. If it is, mark it as a
bookmark property and as "open in sidebar".
- next time a user opens an RSS feed, it will open in the sidebar and format the
RSS feed with a predefined XSL. The style could then be hacked by users if not
wanted to become a setting.

There could even be a built-in group (like Bookmarks Toolbar Folder).
Since bookmarks can already be scheduled, it would be a big approach to
providing an embedded RSS aggregator with minimum footprint.
That should have read: " ... mark it as an RSS bookmark ..." as an additional
property of bookmarks.
Well, I have been happy user of Sage few months:

http://sage.mozdev.org/

I use it in Mozilla Firefox. Somehow I feel this bug is resolved. But what about
those other web browsers that use Gecko engine? What if one day I switch from
Mozilla Firefox to Galeon? If sidebar do not have RSS-interpreter builtin, then
Galeon cannot have RSS-reader in sidebars. Am I right?
