Open Bug 1718574 Opened 4 years ago Updated 11 months ago

Date picker in Today Pane doesn't reflect changes to the currently selected date in Today pane (only remembers last date picker choice), and won't update `Today` if computer is hibernating across midnight with Thunderbird open.

STR

  • From Today Pane showing today's date, open Date picker
  • In date picker, change month and year to a future date, and click on a future day
  • In Today pane header, click circle to return to today (or make any other day current using Today pane controls except the date picker)
  • Open date picker again

Actual

  • Date picker remembers previous date selection (yellow selection marker)
  • Date picker does not always start on the day currently selected and shown in Today Pane (yellow selection marker is on the wrong day)

Expected

  • Perhaps date picker should always start on the currently selected day from Today pane? Is it useful to open date picker on some stale date from my last date picker session, while in the meantime my Today Pane context has changed?

Perhaps date picker should always start on the currently selected day from Today pane?

I agree.
Always starting from the date is currently showed in the Today pane removes potential confusion or the feeling of being lost because the date picker doesn't match the current month/day.
It helps build expectation and it's a good behavior in general.

In a related area, when the date picket is closed, the calendar remembers it's last month and day. IMHO, when I have closed the calendar and then open it again, I want it back to today. I constantly forget to reset it and then don't realize I'm looking at the wrong month when I open it again.

Just met this again, and it's still just confusing: Sometimes yellow selected day in date picker will match the current day of Today pane, and sometimes it won't - so the date picker may even open on a stale month or year (see screenshot above!), plenty room for confusion.
Per Aleca's agreement in comment 2, let's make it a bug then.

That's exactly what this bug is about, except that we just want the date picker's selected day to match whichever day is currently shown on Today Pane, which may not always be today.

Summary: Explore if date picker in today pane should always start on the date currently selected in day pane (currently remembers last date picker choice) → Date picker in Today Pane doesn't reflect changes to the currently selected date in Today pane (only remembers last date picker choice)

Also, when Thunderbird is open and computer hibernates (to disk) across midnight, the date picker's indication of Today (marked blue) will not update to the new day - maybe we can fix that here, too. If not, please move this issue to a followup bug.
