User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:78.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/78.0
Steps to reproduce:
Add many (20-40) bookmarks to a folder. Adding new ones with drag&drop.
Actual results:
Adding new ones with drag&drop may place them at random position. Moving bookmarks makes them often jump around to random positions. It's a total mess since several versions. Fix this idiocy.
Expected results:
Working Firefox. This is something unseen in several months. Maybe try less libtard politics and more good code, for a change?

The Bugbug bot thinks this bug should belong to the 'Firefox::Bookmarks & History' component, and is moving the bug to that component. Please revert this change in case you think the bot is wrong.

Hi Floyd,
I wasn't able to reproduce the issue you've mentioned on Firefox 89.
While moving the bookmarks there is a blue sign on the side/row where the bookmark is going to be placed on button-release.
Could you take a screen-recording of the issue occurring?
Also, please check if these "jumps" also happen in troubleshoot mode. Here's how:

Thanks!

It happens randomly. About 5% of the time.
Sometimes bookmarks won't move when dragged and dropped in a different position.
It also happens in the Library window, but even less often.
This is what I have to use to fix this absolute mess.
Possible requirements for reproducing this bug:
a) separators added as well
b) the items have repeated names, with just different URLs (same site added multiple times with different #labels in URLs), like:
"1718625 - Bookmark entries switch their order randomly" https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1718625
"1718625 - Bookmark entries switch their order randomly" https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1718625#c1
"1718625 - Bookmark entries switch their order randomly" https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1718625#c2
...
How can I comfortably use the browser when I have no trust in such elementary operations?!
It's so frustrating and wastes so much time.

While moving the bookmarks there is a blue sign on the side/row where the bookmark is going to be placed on button-release.
The blue sign is always placed correctly. The bookmark may not.

One more thing which might be related:
often the number of bookmarks in the menu is greater than what fits in the screen's height, and the scrolling top and bottom elements appear in the menu.

Do you use Firefox Sync?
Can you also try this:
- Go to Help -> More Troubleshooting Information
- Scroll down until you find the "Places Database" section.
- Click the verify integrity button and wait for that to complete.
- Restart Firefox, and see if your issue is still reproducible.

Fentanyl, after running the integrity check and restarting, does the issue still reproduce?
Did the computer go to sleep / hibernate at any time when you were running Firefox?

@Mark Banner
after running the integrity check and restarting, does the issue still reproduce?
It is way better after running the integrity check.
But it is still reproducible like 0.1% of the time.
But when it occurs, running the integrity check instantly (without restart needed) fixes the positions (elements are moved to proper place).
> Task: _refreshUI
Maybe this step of the integrity check does the trick?
Can I execute this manually?
Did the computer go to sleep / hibernate at any time when you were running Firefox?
No, never, it's a PC. Also no unclean Firefox exits any time recently, etc.

Pretty sure this is a duplicate of bug 1557853 - moving bookmarks into folder/within folder can cause the orders to be messed up, running integrity check fixes it.
