I think this is not a regression.

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Open https://www.msn.com/en-us/video with New profile.

Actual results:
The video would not playback. Loading spinner is rotating forever.
see screenshot https://webcompat.com/uploads/2021/7/b8a3e5db-307e-446d-ad3b-af7064781532.jpeg

Console shows a lot of error.

Ctrl+f5 sometimes start play very occasionally.

Expected results:
The video will start playback automatically.

Note:
If I install UblockOrigin and enable EasyList filter(by default) from UblockOrigin's dashboard then the video will be able to play.

Based on this and some testing, I wonder if the issue is related to the site trying to play an ad, failing, then never starting the video. I sometimes see an ad flicker over the video player, but never start, whilst in Chromium based browsers I do sometimes get an ad.

Comparing when the video fails to play to when it does I see some extra console output. The following output appears specific to the failure case in my testing

Could be the result of some tracker/ad network code not working as expected and them not handling that and falling over.

I can get videos to play correctly by deleting the following pref which for reasons unknown I had in my prefs.js.
user_pref("media.track.enabled", true);

The only anomaly I see is that when I select a video to play there is no still picture. Clicking on the play arrow starts the video however.

Correction. I now see a picture before I play the video. Perhaps a restart of Fx got things going.

I use uBO (microBlockOrigin) and the video plays, if I turn it off for that site add reload the page I see a short splash of what appears to be an 'ad', with uBO enabled the video plays straight away.

Interesting, I can see this issue on Nightly, but didn't see it on Release. But when I used mozgresssion, I can see this issue still happening on the Nightly a year ago.

By checking the log, it seems like more a website issue, they called video.pause() and sourceBuffer.abort() explicitly and didn't append any data to the source buffer. So the video won't start playing.

Tested with a new profile. Playing msn.com videos produced varying results for me. While I got one video to play the others didn't play at all. Clicking on the video window sometimes produced multiple windows of the still picture. But with the pref I mentioned in a previous post set to disabled, which is the default btw, videos play fine. No problems at all.

I do use uBO which I see mentioned in regards to this bug.

Hi
I am able to reproduce this on MacOS 11 and windows10

Using :
Firefox release 96.0.1 the video plays on MacOS but not on windows
Firefox beta 97.0b7 video does not play
Firefox Nightly 98 video does not play

link to the video

circle keeps spinning

Plays for me on Today's Nightly - running Win11 here.

I can't reproduce this one on my Ubuntu 20.04, MacOS 11 and Windows 10. Video in comment9 played well for me as well. Could you help me provide a debug log with MOZ_LOG=MediaDecoder:5,MediaSource:5,MediaSourceSamples:5,nsMediaElementEvents:5? Also, do you try to play that video in a clean profile, or on a private browsing window?

Thanks!

Im getting mixed results,

attached is what you asked, on MacOS 11 clean profile, on firefox beta97.0b7

I tried once, and it worked.

then i tried a second time with another new profile, and the video did not even start, it stays static with the 3 people with white signs. i was clicking on the image to make the video start but did not start

Could you try to set the autoplay setting to Allow Audio and Video and see if it would fix the issue? From the log, it didn't show any strange things, and I only saw that element kept paused because it doesn't receive any play request from the website.

I suspect that maybe their websites can't handle blocking autoplay logic well, so they actually didn't start playing video even if users have clicked on those videos.

I can reproduce the issue in Nightly98.0a1 Windows10.

FWIW,
If uBlockOrigin is installed, then Nightly98.0a1 works without the issue.

Hi alastor, i changed the autoplay to Allow Audio and Video
and repeated the process , it froze with the loading circle
i did it wit latest nightly version 98.0a1 on MacOS 11

attached is the log
