The Bugbug bot thinks this bug should belong to the 'Firefox::Bookmarks & History' component, and is moving the bug to that component. Please revert this change in case you think the bot is wrong.

Hi,
I am able to reproduce the issue in release 90.0.2, beta 91.0b7 and latest nightly 92.0a1 (2021-07-28) using Windows 10.
I've assigned a component in order to get the dev team involved, but if it's not relevant, please feel free to change it to an appropriate one.
Thanks for your input.
Best regards, Clara.

For me most of the icons on this site are broken, they are supposed to be png but I get <figure> tags. Thus I don't see a favicon in Firefox at all.
Clara, which url did you test that shown a favicon in Firefox?

If the favicon is not visible on the tab, it won't also be visible or wrong in bookmarks. The problem is that these icons are served wrongly by the server.

-
I bookmarked Politico in Chrome, where it is red.
-
Politico is already bookmarked in Fx 90, on the Bookmarks Toolbar, where several other bookmarks are properly multi-colored. As an example, the Comodo Forums bookmark is red and rather similar to how the Politico bookmark used to be. There, as stated in my first post in this thread, the Politico icon, rather than being red, is lack and white, with, on its left end, some apparently generic symbol, which is also on the Narrow Gauge Railroad Discussion Group bookmark. (Hmm, as I was writing this, I began to wonder if that latter icon is multi-colored in my 89.* profile. I will bring that profile up later to check this.)
2.a. Your screen shots are what the icon should look like. I found several instances of this when investigating the icon, so the correct icon is apparently there, but not displayed. (That conclusion is from a non-programmer's viewpoint, so may be incorrect.)
- I still have my last Fx profile from 89., kept for settings reference as I created a new profile when the 89. one, rather old, did not particularly work well with Fx 90.0; there, the Politico icon is still red under Fx 90..

Un-setting severity to ensure this goes back into triage. From Marco's last comment, it is not clear if this is a bug in Firefox or the website.

the favicons they serve are actually html documents containing figure tags and served with an html mime. We don't support those as favicons.
I'll keep this as an enhancement to evaluate whether we should support that, considered other browsers are, but I'd not hold my breath over that, it's an edge case and adding more quirks to the Web doesn't sound good to me.
