RESOLVED DUPLICATE of bug 1721084

People

(Reporter: dpgeller, Unassigned)

Details

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10.15; rv:90.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/90.0

Steps to reproduce:

I just have to wait! This problem has been occurring since I updated by iMac to Big Sur (and had remained through a few point updates). Currently running MacOS 11.5.1 and Firefox 90.0.2

Actual results:

A few times per day (or overnight) I see a request for my Firefox password. It can happen while I'm using Firefox or when some other app is on top or overnight hwen the Mac is dormant). When I do enter the password, the popup always returns immediately and I then have to enter the password a second time. This usually (or always) does the trick.

Expected results:

Nothing, I think. But if there is a new timeout on the Firefox loging, so that apparently random requests are a feature and not a bug, surely making me enter it twice shound not happen at all(?)

Hi Dennis, thanks for filing this. When you say your "Firefox password", do you mean your primary password or some other password, such as Firefox Account password?

If it happens to be your primary password, then this is probably a dupe of Bug 1721084. If this is unrelated to your primary password, then we can move this over to another component and continue the process.

Yes, I believe it is the Primary PW for my computer.( Should I blush that it is the same PW as for Firefox?-- I donlt much repeat passworsd but these date back to the beginnings of the internet, the Macintosh and to whenever Firefox started requiring passwords -- i.e., when hackers all wore white hats!). It does look the same as the bug you reference -- small differences are that I'm on a Mac, and that I typically don't have a gmail window open.
As far as the note about sync on that other bug, not clear. My desktop thought it was syncing, but I forgot to sync my new phone when I got one a few months back, so it was syncing with the Aether! As the salient feature of the bug seems to be the repeated request -- sometimes, by the way, the character indications that I typed the password do show up the first time, even though I get a second request, but sometimes they don't -- it seems like a good bet to merge the two.

Thank you for the quick response!
Bug 1721084 occurs on all platforms, not just mac. Also it is not just happen on gmail.
So this should be a duplicate of Bug 172108 and we already have a fix for it.
As for a temporarily workaround, please try the approach mentioned in Bug 1721084 Comment 65, thanks!
