I don't seem to be able to save anything, when you go to save image or save link
the dialog will pop up asking where you want to save it. Once you select ok it
just closes that dialog and does nothing. It doesn't save what you selected and
download manager does not pop-up.

This only started showing up in recent builds.

Same for me.
It started with builds around beginning of October. I habe tried build 2002926
and it worked. Builds since 20021002 (at least, I haven't tried all builds in
between) don't work.
When clicking on any ftp-link for a download I get an error message bos stating:

"temppath\tempfile" could not be saved, because the source file could not be read.
"temppath" ist my path for temporary files. The name of "tempfile" changes each
time.

this is probably a dupe of that bug, marking it as such.

if someone can reproduce this with a more recent build of mozilla (e.g. 1.3a),
please reopen and give details. thanks
