Steps to reproduce:

  • Accidentially power-down the computer while using Firefox
  • Restart the computer
  • Launching Firefox

Actual results:

Session from a week ago, aka October 16, was restored.
Searching "C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\lsys9z58.default\sessionstore-backups", the "previous.jsonlz4" file was from October 16, while the "recovery.jsonlz4" and "recovery.baklz4" have both been overwritten by the new browsing session already

Expected results:

Session from when I powered down the device, aka session in October 23, should have been restored

The Bugbug bot thinks this bug should belong to the 'Firefox::Session Restore' component, and is moving the bug to that component. Please revert this change in case you think the bot is wrong.

Did you Select Start and then select Power > Shut down? Or did you power off your computer suddenly?
If you click on the menu button to open the menu panel, then click History, then Select Restore Previous Session, does it also show oct 16 session?

The computer was powered off by accidentally placing my phone over the power button, making the computer mistaken me as long-pressing the power button to shut it down.
There were no "Select restore previous session" button in the menu > history submenu, but history of pages browsed are there.

I have encountered the same situation again
After I knocked off my laptop to the floor which disconnected it from power, I picked it uo and restarted Firefox, but it's only able to restore session from two weeks ago

Checking /user/...../Firefix/Profiles/... the previous.jsonlz4 was dated November 22, matching the date that the tabs that were successfully restored. Meanwhile the timestamp of recovy.baklz4 and recovery.jsonlz4 are both dated after the restart of the browser and of similar file size as the file from two weeks ago.

Also, note that, even Ctrl+H seems to have lost history in the past 6 days (November 31 to December 5), if I sort it using the "according to browsing order" function, however the websites browsing history are there if I chose "according to date" instead.

And if it is relevant, the Firefox browser after restoring to November 22 session contain 6 windows, 4295 tabs, which is about 20% less tabs than what was supposed to be opened by the time the computer power was knocked off.

And there were multiple normal crash and recovery between November 22 and now December 5 that tabs were being restored in usual manner.

Edit: No, even in the date sorting browsing history from December 3 and 4 were still lost, only history from before December 2 were conserved
Same in URL suggestion bar

Ctrl+J download history also lost every record in the past two days.

I cannot attempt reproducing the issue in safe mode because 1.) This only happen in accidential crash and then reopening the browser, it is hard to predict when accidental crash will occur and launch the browser ahead of time and 2.) Risk of data losses

As for latest nightly, Does this have separate profile against original, or separate one? As I don't want any more instability here.

Also, I have encountered the situation again, this time the Windows OS crashed due to lack of memory and automatically discontinued my user login session. After I logged in back to my Windows user account and relaunched Firefox it rolled back to session from December 15, losing some 2000 tabs in the process from 7500 tabs to about 5500 tabs. Browsing history doesn't seems to be affected. "Recently closed tabs" or "Recentky closed windows" seems to contain tabs/windows that were "recently closed" as of December 15, instead of tabs that were closed in the past days. Again, there were multiple successful normal recovery in-between December 15 and now even in accidental closjre situation.

I am sorry to hear that. I have also tried to reproduce this today with the latest Nightly 107.0a1 (2022-10-13) on Windows 10x64 and these are my findings and STR:

  1. Set computer date for two weeks in the past
  2. Open Firefox with a new profile and check Open previous windows and tabs
  3. Open the Youtube page 5 times in new tabs (I use the middle click on Topsites on the new tab page)
  4. Close Firefox and set the actual date
  5. Open Firefox and close the Youtube pages
  6. Open the Reddit page 5 times in a new tab (I use the middle click on Topsites on the new tab page)
  7. Press the computer reset button as quickly as possible (I tried ending Firefox from the task manager but I could not reproduce it that way)
  8. After the computer restarts open Firefox with the same profile > AR: the Youtube pages are displayed

Trying the same steps from above but waiting over 30 seconds after step 5 and then resetting the pc restored the Reddit session as expected.

I will mark this as new to get the developer's input on this if this is expected or not because the computer reset maybe happens too fast. Also I don't know for sure if it's the same scenario that @c933103 encountered.

When I have the problem, i was continuing to use Firefox throughout all the ~2 weeks period in between, including regular browsing, opening and closing tabs, and even crashing and restarting and successfully restoring Firefox within such 2 weeks. Thus it might not be the same problem of "computer shut down too fast for new tabs succesfully written into the storage for next restore", however it might be the same problem of "computer suddenly shut down when Firefox try to store new state of session resulting in incomplete session file that caused Firefox must restore back to a state that is much far back despite there were other successfully saved session in between", but this is just my guess and I don't know whether Firefox actually work this way or not.
